It is obvious that the develo)p ments at Baton Rouge this week show that Standard Oil has achieved a decided coup in get ting a legal foothold in Louisiana at the beginning of the era of the development of the state's wealth of resource in oil. It cannot be denied that all things have been done decently and in order. One of its oflicials has said "We want to obey the laws of Louisiana, and if we err, it will be because our lawyers cannot show us the right l)ath." This sounds very fair, but the doubting will reverse the saying of blind Isaac of old: "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau." The Standard Oil's attitude to the law is not always so subservient, but the real burden of the matter lies with the people of louisiana to see that it keeps its present promises.
