More About the Taking of the Forts. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 31 December 1861

More About the Taking of the Forts. Steam Frigate Pawner. } Fort Royal Bay, Nov. 11th, 1861. } Our gunboats went up to Beaufort yesterday, and and found the town and river banks deserted by the while residents. Parties of negroes were breaking open houses and plundering at leisure. The panic exceeds description. We are informed that the families on the main l;md, as well as on this group of sea island, have fled I to the interior in some case* taking their negroes.— These generally, however, remain, and some dozen* have come iuto camp, and have been set at work by the army. Truly South Carolina's day of reckoning has come. She has sown the wind; she is reaping the whirlwind. There is a singular fitness in striking the ef fective hlow at this bold iniquity here iu its birthplace In April last, our flag was for the first time dishonored, on her soil, with such pealing shouts of triumph, and such thundering salvos of artillery, as made the whole State tremble. God grant that it inty fo...

[WRITTK.N FOR TIIK MARIPOSA UAZCTTI J fUne« luggested br hearing an enthusiastic Lady lauding the pleasures of a Voyage on the Pacific ] 'Tis pleasant, you say, o'er the placid ware By gentle zephyr* fann'd, to drift along. Thoughtless, and careless, its dangers to brave, Gently sn<l dreamy, as a lullaby sonic. While little wavelets plash sportively gay, And wanton along like children at play— Hy the bright sunshine all gorgeously dress'd, Sparklio/. and dancing, as onward they're press'd, The hues of the rainbow gleam front each face, And shine on the waters in splendor and grace. Chanced is the scene : in the midnight gale, The howling billows by wild winds are driven. And the poor bark, with rent and tattered sail, Struggles along; her spars all tempest riven ; Sinking, and rising, on each foamy wave. While yawns each gnlph between a threat'ning grave; And through the murky night, no gleam of light, On jaded spirits beam like prospect bright. For hope has lost its geni...
