Farm and Stock of L. G. Morris, Esq., [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 7 December 1855

Farm and Stock of L. G. Morris, Esq., MODNT FOHDHAM, N. Y. This farm is in the town of Fonlham, Westchester county, eleven miles from Nsw York, and accessible by the Harlaem Railroad. The residence of Mr. Morris is at Fordham, where a portion of his stock is kept, the balance, and the larger portion is upon another large farm some sixteen miles distant, of which we shall speak hereafter. The grounds about the mansion are tastefully laid out, and in front is a tine lawn, filled with fruit trees of choice kinds. From the grounds may be obtained a view of the Hudson river, and the surrounding scenery. Having thus briefly referred to the farm, we will go on and introduce the stock, which will be found to be most interesting to your readers. " Short Horn Cattle."— First comes " Duke of Gloster," (red bull) 11.382, calved Sept. 14, 1850, bred by Earl Ducie, Fortworth Court, England, and purchased at the great Ducie sale, in England in 1853, at £682 10s. or about $3,350, he being the highe...

Cultivate the Basket Willow. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 7 December 1855

Cultivate the Basket Willow. I'ajaro Ranch, Sacramento co., Nov. 23, 1855. Messrs. Editors: Will you call the attention of my brother fanners to the importance of the Basket Willow as a crop —a crop at all times marketable at a good price; at a price that will pay better than wheat, even if wheat should bring as high as 5 cents per pound. This may seem startling aud extravagant, but it is a solemn fact. Good basket willow has not during the past ten years brought less than 4 cents per pound, and it frequently brings 7 1-2 cents, or §150 per ton. The yield ranges from a ton and a-half to two and a quarter tons per acre, and the expense per acre of cultivating, harvesting aud preparing for market, is not nearly as great as the outlay per acre on a crop of wheat. Besides, we may reasonably expect, in consequence of the bulky nature of and therefore high freight of baskets, that good willow will bring in San Francisco ( where there are many Germans well acquainted with the basket making...

Obituary. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 7 December 1855

Obituary. At Bik-hton, Mass., on the 25th October, CAPT. JOSEPH WAJUIEN, iy;ed 80 year*. We had tat watching till long past the hour* of midnight, ■with that anxiety which many Caltforaiam have lelt when waiting for news from the " loved ones at home." The mail steamer had been telegraphed, and the river steamer was to bear v* tvished'for messages. At the first cry of the uewsboy we sprang to the office, and taking the Boston Journal, almost mechanically, we were tracing the records o( those who had gone from earth, when our eye met the record ahore. Those who have been like atllicted can only know our paugy. As we gazed upon the record of a loved Father* death ,vr» saw aud we (elt that He who garo us being had been laid in the "silent tomb." Like the rushing pi mighty waters came the memories of the poft, and we went back to the days of our childhood and recalled how oft amid the bitter cold days of a bleak New England winter, we had been borne in the arms uf- that dear parent fron...

To Readers. —We would call especial atten tion to this number of the Farmer; we present many very important communications this issue: The Stock Farm of L. G. Stockton Asylum. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 7 December 1855

Stockton Asylum. Vit have been very much gratified by a visit wo paid tothis celebrated institution o! our State. Melancholy as it ever must bo to see the il wreck of mind." and to wander from room to room, amid hundreds of our fellow beings from whom the light of reason is shut out, yet it is a choering thought to know the Commonwealth has a soul, and the people all as one are touched with true feeling, and have here, in California so well, so nobly, provided for this heavily afflicted portion of our fellow beings, whose lot has been cast where our earo and sympathy can be shown to them. By the kind courtesy of Robert K. Rcid, Esq.. Resident Physician, we wero shown over the whole establishment. "We spent several hours in the various departments, receiving many of the particulars in the histories of some of the patients, in examining the conveniences and comforts here provided for them, and in viewing the handsome cabinets in natural history, collected during five years, by the Doc...
