ESI MOVIES OF '98 M Nathan Murray Staff Writer I loved this movio: I saw it three times. Yes it was a little long but it was the most beautiful movie of the year. The light- ing the music: each scene seemed to drip with color and flavor. Brad Pitt was groat as Death and Anthony Hopkins gave one of the best perfor- mances of the year jMPWflHBHfjlilH BpfSHH You've Got Mail Meg Ryan has got to be the most adorable woman in the world. The movie wasn't that great but she is just so cute. The enitre movie I just wanted to give her a big hug. Her character is my dream woman: those eyes that laugh that smile. To top it off she owns a little bookstore; be still my heart. &4PS-Sffii&S' Directed by Alfonso Cuaron and pho- tographed by Emmanuel Lubezki the same team that made The Little Princess one of my all-time faves the richness of each shot is delicious. Using unique lighting and camera angles they take the audience into a beautiful new world. A-nrz When I was a kid and even now as...

It is in our nature to find a niche where we can escape from being average and at the same time alleviate a little stress anxiety and feelings of inade- quacy. Hare continued: swing and no warm-up addressing tho ball in anticipation of launching it off the first too. With the wind howling and a huge drink (lake) dividing us from safety Hare sends the ball screaming just off the water and down the fairway. Her shot impacts a huge sand-trap to tho right yet takes a wicked bounce and lands pre- cariously safe on a narrow strip of fairway. "Lucky devil" Goodin mutters. "She's always pulling something out of nothing." Hare throws her bag over her shoulder and tosses a few red-locks aside. "Just like I planned it" she announces. Hare completes the introductory lesson by sinking a 30 foot putt downhill off the fringe. She then takes a few steps towards the second tee-box only to shout over her shoulder "Your turn kid." Meredith the daughter of Eddie and Judy Hare took her first swings at the young age of eight. The native of Bryan Texas grew up in the shadows of Texas A&M and often imagined herself "whooping" for the Lady Aggies. However Hare...

The two-seeded Cowgirls who last suffered defeat on January 4th upended a determined North Carolina Wesleyan team who had previously upset the number three-seed Bridgewater (Va.) 84-62. The Dixie Conference Champion Lady Bishops showed little effects of the long journey from Rocky Mount North Carolina by answering every challenge HSU presented in the first half. rielissa Robinson Sends Love From Cambridge Well I'm sitting here the day after the Super Bowl reflecting on watching the game and trying to stay awake because it didn't end until 3am over here. The owner of the local tavern by the school with the only TV broadcasting the big game nearest to us kept it open late so us Americans could watch it. The Super Bowl started at 10pm over here the time they closed on a Sunday. Cambridge is a great town and there are great people within it. Watching the Broncos' Victory there was one thing that seemed wrong...we didn't have the commercials! One of the best parts of the Super Bowl eliminated oh well at least we got to see it. The interesting thing was not in watching the game but how the Brits in the room were watching us watch a piece of home. One they don't understand football after all it's not Rugby. Two they wanted us to sing songs for them. You see in Rugby matches songs are sung throughout the game for entertainment and cheering purposes...

Spot Check Can Dr. Hall Survive one day in the life of a Freshman? HHp" m! K by Laine "Love'Walker It's not athletics theatre auditions or even the sell-back line at the Bookstore. It's a com petition known as "Spot Check: the Trade of a Lifetime." One Hardin-Simmons University freshman or freshwoman that braves and survives "Kenneth Star" questioning "Rush LimbaUgh" reviews and "Congressional partying" is chosen as the Fearless Freshman. He or she trades places with President of Hardin-Simmons University Dr. Lanny Hall for one day. The 1998-1999 winner is Shannon Goss. A freshman Political Science major from Panhandle Texas Goss set his sights high at "Soar to New Heights" Freshman Orientation. Goss and others never knew how high until he was announced as the winner on Tuesday February 29 in Chapel. "I was ecstatic" Goss said remembering the moment he was awarded the prize. "All the day long interviews mud races and brownies I made Dr. Hall paid off." Spot Check was a brain child o...

goWbotysShelton StadiumGettihg New Look by C.Michael Dodd Bland Sports Editor If you hear a joke about Southern Baptists odds are it deals with a reluctance to change. However Hardin-Simmons University and the Cowboy Football team are proving that the Forty Acres isn't your typical conservative institution. The Cowboys will look to finally make their run into the Division III playoffs wearing jerseys symbolic of higher expectations. "We want to be totally focused on reaching the highest level of play at the highest level of competition" Head Coach Jimmie Keeling told reporters at a press conferenceon Tuesday during a luncheon for the HSU Cowboy Club."We've gone with what has gotten it done before but our expectations are golden and we want every part of the program to reflect that" Keeling added. HSU will once again look to Louisiana State University for the latest trends in game attire. Two seasons ago the Division I Tigers unveiled their new special occasion "gold uniforms" in SEC...

. f E A T M R E j jt tv d Forrest McMillan Staff Writer BBEIref -1 Any Student who has been at Hardin- Simmons for any time at all has heard of spoken with or seen Miss Cul'. In most people's opinion Miss Aileen Culpepper is a central part of Hardin-Simmons University and an ideal representation of Christian servanthood and love. "I know that there is not another person who can say that they have lived on this campus for 41 years. And if I had to do it all over again I would not change a thing" says Miss Culpepper. Bom on March 21 1919 in Anson Texas as an only child of a farming couple Miss Culpepper came to Hardin- Simmons to pursue her education and become a teacher. After getting her degree in 1940 and teaching for several years in Ft. Worth she was asked to return to HSU as the assistant to the Dean of Women. She lived in Mary Frances Hall for women for a number of years before moving to Behrens Hall. Visiting with Miss Cul' is always a pleasure and a lesson in life. She can te...

Ryan Merchant Staff Writer Sometimes the most difficult choices stu dents have to make is where to go out to eat. These choices can definitely be difficult if plans are made to eat at a certain restaurant with some friends for the weekend. Upon arrival it is a totally different restaurant. This very situation sad but true seems to happen a lot for a certain building at the cor- ner of Southwest Drive and Highway 83. A few years ago a Shoguns restaurant housed the building and seemed to be doing just fine. However after a couple of years the business was closed down and history has repeated itself numerous times ever since. The next establishment to open there was the highly controversial Knocker?. This restau- rant had the look of the well-known chain Hooters. One would have a better chance of people admitting to voting for President Clinton for his second term than admitting to have eaten at Knockers. Many of Abilene's citizens did not believe that a restaurant which promotes the d...

After a second day of United States led NATO bombing of strategic targets in the former Yugoslavia I stopped many students n the HSU campus and asked them if they new what was going on in Europe and why. The results of that informal survey showed that very few people on this cam- pus and probably anywhere else in America understand exactly what is hap pening there or even what it means for us and for the world. Here are a few brief explanations of who where and why exactly. The former Yugolsavia is a Balkan nation in Eastern Europe that is made up of the three provinces kind of like states of Serbia Kosovo and Montenegro. Serbia is the largest province. It is located in the northern part of the country and is populated by ethnic Serbians. By the way Serbian is both a nationality and an ethnicity. In the south-east portion of the former Yugoslavia is the province of Kosovo. The population of Kosovo is ethni cally Albanian. In the south-west the province of ontenegro is populated by a...

II Warner Bros has one of the best television animation departments in the business. With programs such as The BatmanSuperman Adventures Histeria! and others they are con- tinually pushing the envelope of the medium. It's really too bad that the same cannot be said for their feature animation department. The new version of The King and I is one of those films that causes the viewer to wonder what studio executives are smoking these days. I'm not quite sure what it is but it must be some pretty good stuff. This reworking of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is quite simply a mess in every sense of the word. The basic plot is the same: In 1862 British widow Anna Leonowens (Miranda Richardson) comes to Siam with her son Louis to serve as schoolteacher to the children of King Mongkut (Martin Vidnovic).
