ACTION AT COROWA. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 19 December 1919

ACTION AT COROWA. At a meeting of the Corowa Mu nicipal Council last week the ques tion of linking up the Oakla"ds line with th;: Victorian railways came up for discussi-m, as well as the proposal of connecting the two s\str ins ending at Cjrowa and Wahgunyah, a mile or so apart. " Alderman Thompson shM : ill I3.il! had worktd haul to get the line from Oaklands to Corowa, and would ha\e succeeded only for ti e st'lfishnets of a few .of the Corowa lesideuts. The'Mayor said it was important to remember that ihe Cooiahtn af tair was a coal field, not a mine, and as tluy went clown the coal got better, and was s;.id to be equal to that of Newcastle i'.r steaming or other puttoses All of the output from the field would go to Victoria and South Australia, as it was not likely they would carry coal back to Newcastle ; and th.it being so they should jco f ir a line from Oakland* to the border. The opinions about the mine weie fiom men who knew whn' they were talking about.

It was in April 1915 when Mr J. T Lat;e, of Coorabin, 7i miles from Oakland?, 'was engaged in boring for ivator on his property anil struck coal, Mr Lane and his wife iinined iatel}' decided to put down a shaft which they continued to work with the means at their disposal. The news o£ the discovery of coal had Hpread n sound, and the public from far and near were all talking about it, but many were sceptical and even scoffed at the idea of there being any coal at Oakland*; so that when an effort was tnadu by Mr Lane to g«t a local company formed, hi had no success. Meantime, samples wore se...

If proper stops are takon to beautify the reserve, it wont cost much. Think what it will mean to the town in a few years' time. Not j only will it prove a pleasure to our selves, but it will be the means of attracting many picnio '■ parties from I other towns, which will benefit the tradespeople especially.
