THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY v. AVENEL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 11 May 1951

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY v. AVENEL. In a game marred by a stormy wind which limited scoring to one end, the home side ran out easy winners,! due to. more systematic-'play and .reateir fitness. Greenland won the toss and chose to kick with the wind. First score was kicked by Willis, of Avenel, who re corded a behind. Nice play by Green lands, and Willis (Avenel) held play at each end until Long kicked first score for Thornton, a poinit. A nice lead from Frecker and an. equally good pass by Geoff Mahoney resulted in first goal-to Thornton. Two singles by Symons. Willis was holding out Thorriton, but good football by Da vies, to Symons and on to Long, who snapped a left-foot goal. Avenel, were wimnning.in the ruck, but Long secured for another point. Creaton, winning in the centre, forwarded, for Symons to goal. More behinds by Egan and Geoff Mahoney, and one to Avenel ended the first quarter, with the fig ures: Thornton, 3 goals 6 behinds. Avenel, 2 behinds. Avenel .were still winning i...

ALEXANDRA DOWN TO EUROA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 11 May 1951

ALEXANDRA DOWN TO EUROA. I Furoa gained a big advantage in t winning the toss and kicking with a strong .wind; a wind which dropped in the second quarter and, by the last, had become an ineffective breeze. They immediately dropped into top form, and, playing a fast brand of play-on football, they rattled on 5.9 to 1 point.. Alexandra did well to t hold them to this score, and it was only through the tenacity and bust ling tactics of their backs that they did so. Two of their new men, Alan Boyle and Ron Cumming, did excel lent work in defence. Euroa are 'a big side, even bigger than last sea son, and, led by McIvor, their rucks were calling the tune all day. This player is a big man, and plays the game hard but extremely fair. It was quite apparent that Alexandra were sadly missing Jimmy McNair and Vic Hewitt from their ruck. From the-start of the second quar- u ter their play improved, and they be- a gan to hold their own; but Euroa had too big a start on them. The play was fairly e...

NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 11 May 1951

-NOTES. Two former. Alexandra players, Mick Hall and -Ron Parker, took the field for Euroa. Ron Parker came into the picture many times on the back line. The new colors of the club, com bined with new faces, made the job of picking out players very difficult last Saturday. However; they look much nicer, and towards the end of the game one could pick them but quite well. Supporters will be pleased to know that Jim McNair and Vic Hewitt will be back into harness any day now. Jim Bradley has a new idea at prac tice, which caused much favorable comment. It is quite obvious that the ,town of Euroa is right behind their cricket and football clubs. The ground is a picture, and must be one of the best country grounds in Victoria. It ap pears that everything possible has been dore to make both cricket :and football a pleasure to spectators and players alike. The committees of our club are working hard to gain the support and respect of our townspeople. The so cial committee is discussing man...

ALEXANDRA Football Club CLUB CHATTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 18 May 1951

ALEXANDRA SFootball Club CLUB CHATTER. We wish Bill Luck all the best in his new job. Bill recently transferred from the Vacuum Oil Company.to the Utah 'Construction Co., much to our' relief. That popular ruck man, Jim Still man, appeared at training this week. A very pleasing feature of this year s football training is the appear ance of many local juniors. Among them arc some still attending school, and the club is to be congratulated 'on its far-sighted policy in encourag ing and coaching these budding chain pions of the future. Two fifteen years old lads show nat ural ability that could take them into League teams in two or three years. Roo Fox would -rave- been picked as full forward last Saturday but for the fact that Yarck refused to grant hunm a day permit. It looked as though he could have hWld down that position for. the rest of the season. A silver tea service, which 'as do nated to .the club .by Mr. Jack Law rence, a Melbourne busiiess irian; is be disposed of for funds....
