The Hate Howarde Dramatic Coinpauy. The above company opened their season at Hay on Monday night staging ' No Mercy, or the Vagabond.' The audience was a very large one, and thoroughly appreciated the excellent staging of tne play. Miss Kate Howarde as Adelaide Creswell (Tlie Village Belle) performed her part in every way satisfactorily, such as could be expected from the popular favourite. Her singing was also much appreciated. Mr Harry Craig as Mr Sim Moses (a money lender) made a grand Jew, and caused much merriment, his acting being first-class. Mr Newton-Carrold as Harry Harding the Vagabond, was especially good in his rather difficult role, and carried the sympathies of the audience with him ; as also did Miss Amy Sherwood as Ned (the Waif) even to a greater extent. Her rendering of the character was ex cellent. Miss D. L'Strange in the character of Molly Maston (of the Portland Arms) made an ideal hostess of a first-class hotel, and her acting was superb, while the songs she ...

Hay Police Court Tuesday. (Before Mr J. Johnston, J.P.) William Hing was charged with being drunk in Lachlan-street, and pleaded guilty. Fined Is. James Slater, charged with being | drunk, pleaded guilty, and was fined Is. James Coombes was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Lachlan street, Hay, and pleaded guilty, Fined 5s, in default, 24 hours. At the Small Debts Court on Tues day, before Mr J. Johnston, J.P., E. Whitens sued W. Miles for £11 8s rent due. Mr 'Wilkinson appeared for the plaintiff, and asked for an ad journment. The Magistrate granted an adjournment for a week. Mr Burnett, C.P.S. has returned to take up his duties at the local Lands Office. Mr Burnetts' health is greatly improved. — 'Xarandera Argus.' A very handsome Bishop's chair has been placed in St. Paul's Cathedral in memory of the late Bishop Linton. It was consigned to Mr A. E. We have been hearing a great deal of Mr. Andrew Carnegie lately, and a short' sketch of his early life, will, I ain sure, prove interesting to my readers. His father was a well-to-do master weaver in Dunfermline. Scotland, before the days of steam looms, but these so usurped the place of the old hand looms that he was deprived of his means of livelihood. Referring to this time Andrew Carnegie, the present millionaire, writes : — ' The first serious lesson of my life came to me one day when my father had taken in the last of his work to tlie merchant, and returned to our little home greatly distressed because there was no more work for him to do. I was then just about ten years of age, but the lesson burnt into my heart, and I re solved then that the ' wolf of poverty' should be driven from our door some day, if I could do it.' Hay Hospital. The usual monthly meeting of the hospital committee was held at the Athena;um on Thursday night. There were present : — Mr A. F. Julian (president) in the chair, and Messrs .T. .Tnhn«tnn- Thnmnqnn. Bellamv. Horton, Proctor, Maclure, Virtue, Robertson, Barnett, J. Donohoe, Stanger, Beveridge, Lawson, W. But terworth, Rogers, Rev. Mr Jennings and the Very Rev. Father O'Connell. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Alexander, - Correspondence. From the Hay Hospital Fete Com mittee asking that three delegates be appointed from the Hospital Com mittee to the Fete Committee. Messrs G. Horton, J. C. Virtue and the Rev.
