HARROW. January 31. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 2 February 1877

HARROW. (kOM OURn O\V OOnnRnPONDENT.) January Si. We came very near having a sensation in the shape of a hlouse on fire yesterday, as some out-buildings and fencing adjoining one of tihe houses in the township caught fire, and were quickly reduced to ashes. It appears thie good lady of the house had lighted a fire outside with the double inten. tion of conducting her culinary operations and keeping the inside of the house cool, the day being pretty warm, and incautiously putting it too near the fencing, it caught fire. Tile whole place would, most certainly, have shared tie fate of the out-buildings only for the intervention of some neighbours. T'hin shows how careful people ought to be when lighting fires outsideat this time of the year. The telegraph line repairer has been here during the last week, and has been reno vating the poles through the township by giving them three coats of paint, thereby con siderably improving the appearance of them, as they were getting rather rusty l...

Willie was walking with mue. And he asked me if 1 thought ever' A farmer's wife I coald bq; For I am a city girl, you know, And a farmer' son is he, Willie wears homo-spun trousers, And such a coarseo straw hat I Aut the face that looks from under the rim, Is handsome and brave, for all that; And his eyes they look at me so queer ?That my heart goes pit-a.pat. SPELLING REFORM. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 6 February 1877

SPELLING REFORMW. The spelling reform which was insuge. rated by Mr. Fitman, and the advocacy of which brought upon him little else than ridicule, has found favor In high p!aces, and will now make a fresh start with a better prospect of achieving success. Professor Max Moller, the higheat authority on the subject, spoke favourably in his work on The scince of Languages of Mr. Pitman's labors, and be is now disposed, aso would appear from a recent article of his in the Fortnightly Rerins. to take an active part in turthering the reform. He approves of Pitman's alphabet atrd system and thbs is a great point gained, for al though there is s pretty general acquie scence as to the desirability of a change, there was great danger of a split at the very outset as to the symbols as well as the scope of the alterations which might be considered desirable. The choice at present lies between the "fooetik" of Pit man and the " Glosik" of %ir. Ellis. The alphabet of the former includes some new ...
