The Debt of Alcoholism. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 November 1893

The Debt of Alcoholism. The nnat telling sermon, simply because it. docs ii't attempt argument against the drink habit, is the comparison of national expenditure on bread, clothing and other necessaries as against the amount squandered in intoxicants. You will see, in almost orory Temperance Ball in tho world, diagrams showing the enormous proportion of the world s earnings spent in contracting a debt against health and society, which (he drinker can never repay, for the reason that his opportunity to do so will never arrive. In England At any ra'o, the drink bill and cost of food, cloth ing and education is as 8 to 1, and all thi A expansion of expenditure means the con- Cj; traotion of ever-incroasinR debt— against It health, against society, against decency.' f This drink diBcnso is a terrible thing. Things to Remember By. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 November 1893

Things to Remember By. If a great fortuno were unexpectedly loft me (and it would bo unexpected) I'll wager anything that I should never forget the time or place where I first heard of it. Or if 1 should go home to-ni^ht and find (which God forbid) my house burned up, and everything in it, I'm equally certain th»t the main circumstances connected with the event would stick in my memory until all the Past's pictures fade out in the light of the life that is to be. Ttvou lm thi* filmft u'ifll vnu. T fa.nrtv 2 \i\r Atid here comes a woman who will not soon forget the month of December, 1890. It is not because Christmas comes in that month, for it is what she lost, not what was given her, that makes that particular time stand oufc above other times. And what she lost was her health,, a matter worth talking about, as one never can tell when he may be more interested in that subject than in politics or the price of provisions. She says her illness began with nausea. She could keep nothing...

A Fishing Party at Jervis Bay. A ROUGH TRIP. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 November 1893

A Fishing Party at Jervis Say. A ROUGH TRIP. A party of Shoalhaven residents had a rough though withal enjoyable time at Jervis Bay on Thursday last. They went down from Nowra early the previous evening, so as to get an early start for the schnapper grounds by steamer next morn ing. During the night a strong south easterly gale started to blow, and heavy rain fell ; still, as the steamer was ready alongside the wharf at Currumbene, and the party being amply provisioned, it was agreed, despite the heavy rain falling, that the amateur fishermen should proceed outside the Bay and try their luck. So the trim s.s. Bunabie was under way shortly after 6 a.m., but, nearing the Heads, all idea of proceeding outside was abandoned, as a heavy sea was breaking, and there was then in the Bay a ground swell the like of which hitherto had not been experienced by any one of tlie party. The steamer, therefore, was kept well within shelter of the lee shore, and lines were cast throughout the day for ...
