W. A. Mining Company. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 9 April 1850

W. A. Mining Company. A General Meeting of the Shareholders of the above Association was held on Sa- turday last. Mr B. M. Habgood having been called to the chair, read the requisition for calling the Meeting, which was for the purpose of discussing the propriety of discontinuing the works at Kelmscott, and purchasing the section near the Murchison river on which copper was lately discovered. The Chairman said that under existing circum- stances ho did not consider the company would act wisely in attempting to make the purchase proposed, and with regard to the discontinuance of their present works, he thought they should act very unwisely in doing so, considering the very favorable prospects of ultimate success they now held out, as was shown by the specimens then in the room. lTo observed some of the requisitionists for calling the meeting were present, and they would probably fa- vour the Shareholders T\ ith the opinions which had called forth the requisition. Mr. T. Carter said t...

' ? - To the ICditor of the " Independent Journal.'1 Sir,-In certain districts of this colony the number of Parkhurst Immigrants has of late considerably increased, and, in some instances, their proximity to each other has occasioned no little trouble and an- noyance. Where such juxta-position ia unavoidable, great care should be taken that too frequent intercourse should not take place. Every means should be adopted ,to secure' full employment of time. Un- necessary harslniess should be avoided, and strict obedience and regularity enforced. Let masters bear in mind that they have duties to perform as well as their servants. As the majority of our Parkhurst popu- lation are not aware of their exact position, I think it would be advisable to furnish each one before entering...

Perilous Situation of Dr. Hooker and Campbell, in India. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 April 1850

Perilous Situation of Dr». Hooker and Campbell, in India. It appears that Dr. J. D. Hooker, the eminent botanist, has been travelling in the higher Himalaya of Sikkim for the last six or seven months, prosecuting his researches with equal" ardour and success. It was made an especial request by the Governor Genera].- to'the Sikkim Rajah, through tbe Political Agent, DE. Campbell that every facility should be afforded him in the prosecution of his enterprise. In- stead of meeting his Lordship's wishes, however, the Rajah systematically placed every obstacle in his path, and did every thing in his power, short of actual violence, to thwart his projects. All remonstrances and representations on the part of Dr. Campbell were alike unheeded, and he felt himself called upon, therefore, to recom- mend the Government to such stringent measures with the Rajah as should recall him to a sense of the position in which he stood towards the British power. Such was the untoward aspect of our relati...

Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 April 1850

Local Intelligence. A Lascar on Monday last reported to the Go- vernment that he had discovered a vein of Lead ore in the Toodyay district, of which he produced specimens but declined to state the whereabouts, unless satisfied that remuneration would follow. His Excellency so far encouraged the man, as to agree, if he would bring down a larger quantity, to pay his expenses. The specimens he exhibited were contained in a quartz matrix. A deplorable accident occurred in Perth on Wednesday morning, at the clay-pit near the re- sidence of the Rev. J. B. \\ ittenoom, where the material for the formation of the Roadway in the cross-streets is being extracted. The sufferer, a young man named Palmer, the driver of one of the teams employed in carting the clay, was incau- tiously standing under an overhanging mass when it suddenly gave way, and falling upon him the poor fellow had one*.of his thighs broken and a wrist dislocated. The three natives under sentence of death for murder, will und...

Bunbury. From our own Correspondent. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 12 April 1850

Bunbury. From our own Correspondent* On Saturday, the 30ch March, the lad Pickering, whose exploits have attracted considerable attention in the neighborhood of Perth, was captured near Bunbury, and, it was thought, safely lodged in the lock-up there. During that night, however, he again contrived to make his escape. As soon as the circumstance was made known to the Resident Magistrate, that gentle- man promptly despatched a police consta- ble with some natives, to trace out the es- caped prisoner's place of retreat. In the course of Sunday he was re-captured, and more rigorous measures adopted for his detention. So artfully was his plan carried into effect, that it was ».thought probable that Pickering had some accomplices, and Mr. Eliot lost no time in thoroughly in- vestigating the matter. After a careful examination of several parties on the Mon- day following, I regret to say that no par- ticipation in the escape could be brought to light. The Blade Swan reached Bunbury on Thur...
