THE SENTENCE OF THE COURT. Published by arrangement with Ward, Lock & Co. Ltd., London and Melb. All Rights Reserved. CHAPTER IV. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 12 August 1914

THE SENTENCE OF THE COURT. By FRET) M. WHITE. Published by arrangement with Ward, Lock & Co. Ltd., London and Melb. All Rights Reserved. CHAPTER IV. Gilray shrugged his shoulders al most indifferently. He was getting accustomed to these dramatic epi sodes. Besides, he had nothing to be afraid of. Let him only get his money and he would not trouble this amazing household again. All the same, there was something exceeding ly striking about this remarkable old man. He might have come straight from a stage setting, so strange was his aspect. He was "Gaspard" and "Shylock" in one-tall and lean, and high of fore head from which the leonine grey hair was tossed carelessly back, he had thin, dark hatchet-like features and eyes that glowed like stars behind his gold-rimmed glasses. His keen, clever face was lined and wrinkled, his skin the color of old parchment. To strengthen the likeness to the classical example of miserliness, he wore a kind of dressing-gown of vel vet, and on his...

Theft of Teeth. NEARLY HALF-A-MILLION GONE. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 12 August 1914

Theft of Teeth. NEARLY HALF-A-MILLION GONE; Burglars broke into the offices of a dentist's , furnishing company in Paris and stole nearly 500,000 teeth in gold, platinum, silver, an ounce and a half gold plate, and several objects: at ojice portable and valuable. The value of the goods stolen is at least £400,000. The robbery, in its skill' and finish, bears the sign-marks of expert burglars, but not. unfortunate ly, their sign-manual, for the intruders "worked" with indiavubber gloves.1 The fact that the men did not attempt to break open any desks or drawers^ proves that they were acquainted with the internal urrangerirents of the offices. They loft a large number}' of uorcelain teeth, not considering them worth carrying away. The usual Inquiry has been opened, but the po lice, owing to the precautions taken by the burglars, will And their task r.arder than usual.. The firm was to-, sured against theft.

ABORIGINALS AS TIN MINERS. LIFE AT BAMBOO CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 12 August 1914

ABORIGINALS AS TIN MINERS. LIFE AT BAMBOO CREEK. By "Prospector." Bamboo Creole is forty miles north east of Marble Bar, in Western Aus tralia, and Moolyolla is twelve miles out on the creek road. Moolyella has a very rich tin field, but is now on its last legs, so to speak. There aro fifty lin-scratchers still there, mak ing from tucker up to £5 per week. There aro a number of aboriginals in. the locality, and the whites employ the gins to "yandie" their tin-i.e., to clean it-which is done on a piece of wood hollowed out after the fashion of a butcher's tray, and described by natives as a "yandie." This contriv ance is jigged by a peculiar motion of the wrist that impels the dirt in one direction while the tin goes the other. Only the gins do it. The "bucks" are employed on the stations as outrid ers, shepherds, bullock-driverB, etc., and take to* it fairly well, being in physique a better class than moat aboriginals. When left to themselves the bucks make the gins do all the work ...

Make Your District Known [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 12 August 1914

Concerning some parts of the district news comes but seldom. This is not entirely our fault; we have no miracu lous power of knowing: what is happen ing at all the places within our area of circulation. It is the fault of residents, in the silent places. Will some man or woman take the : matter in hand and cause the silence to cease ? ' If no one else is doing it for your district, will you try on these lines V Send accounts of public and social events in your township and neighbour hood, such "as weddings, deaths, acci dents, concerts, matters touching dis trict industries, etc. Write the names of persons very distinctly. Dont bother about grammar or spell ing ; it's the editor's work to look after those trifles. The barest skeleton is enough. Write only on one side of the paper. - Write your name and address on some corner-not for publication, but .to p*ove good faith.

THE one topic of public interest is the war. It has overshadowed' everything else ; and with good reason. Greater issues are at stake than have arisen in the life-time of any person now liv ing. On the result of this war depends not only the safety of the British Empire, but the fate of at least four of the greatest Continental nations. So far the war appears to have gone com pletely against the nation that instigated it; but the big bat tles, both on land and: sea, have yet to be fought, and Germany is not likely to yield to the pres sure brought against her without a fierce resistance. Federal [lections. MR MANIFOLD AT LISMORE. Mr J. C. Manifold, the Liberal candi date for Corangamite, was given a splendid hearing at his meeting'in the Lismore Mechanics' Mall on Saturday j night. Cr W. M'Dowall, president of j the Hampdenshire Council, in his chair- ; man's address, thought the meeting ; was not so big as this district should turn out, but a number of late-comers ; comfortably filled the hall, and there 1 were very few vacant seats at the close of the'address. In introducing the candidate, the chairman said that nobody knew Mr Manifold better than he did, and he knew nothing but good about him. (Applause.) He referred briefly to the war, and said that although it would I mean that not so much interest would j now be taken in the elections, it was j the duty of everybody to go to the poll j and record their votes.
