BANK-NOTE LITERATURE. (ST. JAMES'S CAZETTE.) [Newspaper Article] — Kyabram Union — 11 November 1887

BANK-NOTE LITERATURE. (ST. JA? ES'S OAZ2TE.) In Lockhart's "Life of Soott" there I a reference to bank note literature. Lady Louisa Scott had sent to the novelist an original verse that was found on the back of a bank-note by Lady Douglas. It is ohiefly notable as a rare Instcene of the bank.note rhymester's parting with his money in a Christian spirit. "Go, poor devil, get thee gone?l" is the kind of parting salutation most in favour; but the note that fell into Lady Douglas's hands said : -Faowell, my note. and whre s,'er yo wend. Sun grdy senesor, ad be the poor man's frienod. too'v left poor one to one l plrO., And drlve derpdlr and hunger trom hie door. These lines called to Scott's recollection the murder of Begble, a bank porter, because it was thought that the notes stolen at that time might be traced through an "idle young fellow," to quote Scott's reply to Lady Louisa Scott, "having written part of a playhouse song on one of them." Many of them were discovered, but acciden...

The Rath [?]altra. [Newspaper Article] — Kyabram Union — 11 November 1887

The R?th ,lattra. The "Oaloutta Engliahma" calle attention to a remark.ble decline in the popularity of the great Rath Jattra, or Car Festival, at the JoRggroant Temple in Ories. TIbt the number of vieitors this year bhow a large do crelme mtlht have been expected, owhlg to the reosnt loe of two pilgrim atemers anod to the common belief that the lole of a third bad been predicted. It appears, however, that although the falling off le more marked this iear, is hba been golgh on sleadila for some yeare put. The relilooue enthuaals of the crowd is amid to be also dileppseoln. There il no longer a wild brush for the ear, in which the Idol is dragged from the templeto a country houeo and back again, and on seega occasions It ns been n?eulsrey to bire oootiel to perform bthe work.,

SOME, POINTS. IN, DIPHTHERIA' Few diseaese caune more alarm in' a house. 'hold than this. No withstanding its fatal"! prevalence and' awful ravages, it in only in recent" times that we have become mote intimately acquainted with its true nature, and until the year 1859 the name diphtheria weas almost unknown in Enilish medical ,literature. Bretonnean, of Tours, in a:treatise entitled " Researches upon Diphtheria," first pointed out the pathology of this disease areht, and to him we owe the name. The disease has been indefinitely and vaguely described by eminent medical writers during the laet 2,000 years, but not clearly understood.' Its varying intensity at different times and in different persons may account for this. Even now many physicians claim that membranous croup and diphtheria are identical, while many more the directlF opposite. One asserts positively one thing and another as positively the opposite view. There are many points to favour each opinion, which we can hardly r...
