Sir,-My attention has been directed to an anonymous letter in your paper of yesterday's   date, which I had overlooked when writing an   answer to your strictures on my conduct as surgeon-superintendent of tho Legion of Honor. The writer, whose information you seem to rely on, therein states that the immigration agent visited the " poop only," it being evidently the intention of the writer to convoy to tho public the idea that the inspection was a mere formal one, and that the agent took no interest in the duties he was called upon to perform, Now, sir, the truth is, I accompanied the agent in his visit to the main deck, to the cook's galley, the engineer's department, where the agent put several questions as to the quantity of water he could distill ; to the bakehouse, where the con- dition of oven was pointed out ; and to the be- tween decks, where he examined many of the berths ...

CENTRAL POLICE COVET. Wednesday, July 13. Before the Police Magistrate. Drunkenness.-William May, Joseph New- ton, and Charles Wansteth were each fined 10s. for drunkenness. Larceny. - Seth Flithcroft, who was convicted on the previous day of having stolen a quantity of beef from the shop of Mr. Mayne, and re- manded for sentence, was brought up and sen- tenced to two months' imprisonment in Brisbane gaol, with hard labor. Vagrancy.-Frederick Morrison, charged charged with the above offence, was allowed another chance, and the case was dismissed. Having Stolen Property in his Posses- sion.-William Thompson was charged with having in his possession a fowl which had been stolen from the premises of Bishop Tufnell. Prisoner pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr. Macnish. James Gordon deposed that he was sexton at St. John's Church, and knew that the Bishop lost a number of fowls on Saturday morning last, one of which, a laying hen, was found by himself and another person on the pr...

TELEGRAPHIC. (FROM OUR TELEGRAPHIC CORRESPONDENTS.) TOOWOOMBA. July 13. The Civil Sittings commenced this day with the case of Baur v. Blaxland and Others. It is not yet concluded. Intense disgust has been expressed in town about the arrangements mode concerning the convict Ritchie. Within twelve hours of sen- tence of death being passed upon him, orders were given to Larkins, a contractor, to erect a scaffold within the yard of tho gaol for Ritchie's execution. SYDNEY. The advices received by the mail from Eng- land have caused an advance in the price of tea. Heavy shipments of tobacco have been ad- vised. The suspected robbers of the Bathurst mail have been captured. The Pacific Insurance Company have declared a dividend of 20 per cent. TOOWOOMBA CIRCUIT COURT. (From our Special Reporter The criminal sittings of the Cucuit Court at Toowoomba commenced to-day before his Honor   Mr Justice Lutwycha, with a heavier list of cases for trial than has ever yet como before a       Queensland Judge, there being no less than 21 cases on the calendar, five of which were of a capital nature. The members of the bar present were: The Attorny General, Mr Blakeney, Mr Jones, Mr Lilley, Mr Bramston, and Mr M'Devitt The attorneys present were Mr Roberts, Mr Macalister, Mr Hamilton, and Mr Sullivan.
