THE DAYS OP THE WEEK AND THE PLANETS. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 11 August 1875

THE DAYS OP.THE WEEK AND THE PLANETS. { Contemner;/. Review.) One of tho cardinal'pnneiplra of astrology was this: That overy day and every hour is ruled by its proper planet. Now, in tho ancient Egyptaln astronomy there were seven planets ; two, the sun and moon, circling round tho earth, the rest circling round the sun. The period of circulation was apparently taken as the mear sure of each planet a dignity, p:obably because it was judged that the distance corresponded to the period, 'we know, that some harmonions relation between the distances and pcriodswas supposed to exist. When Kch ler . discovered tho actual, law, he conceived that he had in reality found out the mystery of Egyptian astronomy, or, as ho expressed it, that he had ''stolen the golden vases of tho Egyptians.' Whethor they had clear ideas as to tho nature of this relation or not it is certain that they arranged the planets in order (beginning with the planet of longest period) as follows : — I Saturn. 2 Jupiter....

Parliament Is about closing Its labours for the ses sion, and every person who has any regard for the honor and respectability of the colony will rejoice to see tho doors .shut, nnd tho honorable members returning to their homes. Tho scenes which have been , enacted dmv 'ng the session, which has come so near on end wero most disgraceful. If the character of tho people were to bo estimated by tho way In which a few. members of Parliament haive been conducting themselves, wo must stand very low indeed in the good, opinion of those who honor truth and uprightness as passports to respectabi lity. One honorable member rises tn his place to call public attention to a repprt which he profosse9 to havo received from a person oiitsldo Parliament to tho offect that tho Hon. tho Minister of Lands had on two separate occasions received money as a roward for procuring a Government billet to a needy friend, and another states that his virtue was endangered by a person offering him a bribe to vot...

TOUGHENED GLASS. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 11 August 1875

TOUGHENED GLASS. Although tho manufacture of glass has been carricd on. for about 2,000 years, it does not appear that any at tempts to overcome its inherent brittleness and liability to fracture, and nt the same time to persevere its trans parency,, have, proved successful— if, indeed, they hiive ever been, made, which doubtful. It is true that the French philosopher, Reaumur, many years since, hard ened glass somewnat Dy exposing it to a high tempera ture tor a considerable time. But this process, which is technically termed devitrification, while it hardens,, at the ;same time crystallizes the glass and renders it opaqtie,: the product ? being known as Reaumur's .por celain. Seven years since, however, M. Francois de la Bastle, a Frencn engineer, after a long and patient in vestigation Into the subject, discovered a simple means of rendering glass practically unbrittle, and at tlie same time of.pre8erving its transparency. :Thoro were many delicate conditions involved in the proc...
