Leaves from the Note-Book of a West Australian Engineer. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Leavesfrom the Note-Bdok of a West Australian Engineer. Under this heading London 7'rutl1L of April 23, has the following interesting para graphs: HANNANS BROWN HILL. Nominal capital, £75,000. Working capi tal, £15,C00, and 5,000 shares of £1 each in reserve. This is undoubtedly one of the rechest mines at present opened up ; there is a large quantity of ore in sight, and if the treatment process bears out what has been claimed for it, the shares at their present price of £6 5s should double themselves be fore the end of the year. GREAT BOULDER. The flotation of this company has the repu tation of having been of an exceptionally " bold" description. Be this as it may, the developments now show it to be a mine of great wealth, and it is impossible for some considerable time to come, to mill greater re turns than are now being made; but it would be better policy were the output restricted to about oza per ton, instead of the present average. The company has a very large area, and I sh...

THE KALGOORLIE PROPRIETARY. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

THE KALGOORLIE PROPRIETARY. This mine, which was notoriously rich when worked by the original prospectors, who had to pay their way out of the gold dollied from the small but rich quartz reef running through the west side of the lease, has long been un"er a cloud. Ever since the company floated to work it has been in possession there has been a complaint made that there was no gold in the mine. Splendid reefs and lodes were opened up, but still the same old cry was raised that no gold was visible in the ore, and none could be obtained by dollying. This has now been altered. Mr Rogers was appointed manager some three or four weeks ago, and has already discovered four lodes carrying fair gold. The chief discovery has been a lode 5ft thick running through the middle of the block. It is nice-looking formation, and averages about an ounce at the point at which the crosscut intersected it, while a little further west there is a two-foot lode carrying fair gold. It is only fair to the prev...

Attempted Burglary at Coolgardie. COOLGARDIE, May 27. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Attempted Burglary at Coolgardie. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] COOLGtRDIE, May 27. What appears to have been a most de liberate attempt at robbery occurred yester day morning about 2.30, at Colreavy's Sham rock HoteL Sylvester-street. At the hour mentioned Mrs Colrcavy, the licensee, was in bed, but not asleep, and her suspicions were aroused by hearing sounds as if the windows and doors were being tried. It may be mentioned that Mrs Colreavy occu pies a bedroom in the front of the house facing Sylvester-street, and in the next room two of her children sleep. This also faces the same street. Mrs Colreavy imme diately rose, and peeri, g out, saw two men outside her bedroom window, while two more were near the door of the children's room. She spoke to them, and said it was too late to get any drink, wher.upon they walked away. However, they quickly re turned, and then Mrs Colreavy recognised that it was time for action, so arming her self with a revolver, she lifted the lower sash of...

BANK OF ENGLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

BANK OF ENGLAND. It was thought that whatever of surprises the new lode in the Bank of England had to furnish had been exhausted before the S0ft level had been reached. but this is not the case. The development to which we re ferred in yesterday's issue has taken place below the 50ft level, and as the other finds previously reported sink into insignificance as compared with this development. Two feet of stone in the present bottom of the shaft carries nearly one-third of its weight in gold. Coarse pieces are studded all over the samples, while the stone containing the coarse pieces is in addition full of fine gold. Seams of almost solid metal an inch to two inches thick run through the blocks, while the softer schistose mateiial on the walls is very rich in fine gold. The bottom of the shaft is at present one of the sights of the field, and it is doubtful if the Great Boulder, sensational as she has been at times, ever exposed a face equal in richness to that of the Bank. A very big...

What is Telluride? [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

What is Telluride ? In Eissler's " Metallurgy of Gold " he says of telluride gold ores :--" The gold ores of Nagyag and Off?.nbanya in Hungary are highly prized on account of their contents in tellurim, which is rarely met with in mines. Tellerium is important on account of its employment in the manufacture of thermo electric batteries, and an expeditious and cheap method for the extraction from ores, is, therefore, much to be desired. The analysis of the Hungarian ores gave the following re sults :-Tellurium, gold, silver, a considerable percentage of quartz, carbonate of lime, and carbonate and sulphide of maganese. A quantitive determination of the ores gave the following results :--30 to 40 per cent. of quartz ; 10 to 20 per cent of carbonate of lime; 15 to 20 per cent of carbonate and sulphate of maganese; 5 to 8 per cent of lead sulphate ; 1 to 21 per cent of copper sulphide; ' to 2 per cent of clay, 1 to 4 per cent of zinc sulphide, with some cobalt nickel, anti monium, and a...

MINING. Block 45. A BIG DISCOVERY. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

MINI NG. Block 45. A BIG DISCOVERY. It is stated that telluride gold ore has been found in the lode at the 100ft level of Block 45. Mr Holroyd, of the firm of Messrs Tinley, Holroyd and Co., assayers, states his assays of the stone went as high as 90oz per ton, and as little free gold is obtained by panning he tried the stone for telluride. Under the blow pipe the ore answered in every respect to the descriptions given in the text books of the reaction of telluride, and he is now satisfied that he has thus solved the apparent descrepancy between the dish and fire tests of the stone. His experiments were witnessed by several other assayers, including Dr Earp of Brown Hill, and all agreed with him that the confirmation was complete. The stone has been puzzling the management for some time, and Mr Eades to test the assays took cheek samples in one or two instances and had them tried in Cool gardie, and in one or two instances the results were surprisingly high, while in all cases the l...

Mining News. BLOCK 45. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Mining News. (BY OUR MINING REPORTER.) BLOCK 45. The crosscut from the 100ft level of the main shaft of Block 45 struck the lode within a few feet of the shaft. The reef is a solid body of quartz and schistose material about three feet wide, and in places shows a little free gold. Much of the gold is very fine, and a good deal of it is carried in the pyrities, with which the lode abounds. The manager has had careful assays made, and a bulk sample from the whole width of the formation, about three feet, gave returns varying from six to eight ounces. The other assays gave the following returns :-Con centrates from the lode with pyrities 66oz 9dwts, and 49oz 19dwts per ton ; Bulk assay, full width of the lode, 260oz 9dwts per ton; picked stone showing no gold 1 loz 9dwts and 11oz 5dwts per ton. One of the singular features of the lode is the great quantities of calcite found in the formation. This, like the quartz, carries gold, and although at the point it was met with the lode has a ...

BLOCK 45 GOLD TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

BLOCK 46 GOLD TO THE EDITOR. SI-A most interesting feature of the occurrence of gold appears in the Block 45 Mine, Kalgoorlie. I have taken samples from the dump said to be from the 108ft level from this mine. The ore consist prin cipally of calcite carrying a large percentage of rich gold-bearing tellerium. From the experiments so far made by me I have come to the conclusion that this telluride of gold is sylvanite carrying between 30 and 40 per cent of gold. Specimens may be seen at Tinley, Holroyd, & Co's. office, and I shall be pleased to demonstr.te my experiments to any chemists and metallurgists on the field. The ore gives but poor prospects (in comparison to the value of the ore with the ore) with the dish. but the assays are very high. The occurrence of telluride of gold is very rare in Australia, and is therefore a very interesting feature to mining men.-I am, &c., ARTHUR J. HOLROYD, Assayer and Mining Eugineer.

Occurrence and Treatment of Telluride of Gold. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Occurrence and Treatment of Telluride of Gold. [BY ERLE HUNTLEY.) Although gold occurs associated with sulphur and arsenic in pyrites, it is not yet definitely settled whether this gold is chemi cally combined with the sulphur or arsenic or whether it is merely dessimmated through out the mass as free gold, in minute quanti ties. The latter seems the most probable conclusion. Gold also occurs as an alloy with silver, rhodium, bismuth, and other metals, but the only occurrence which is with out doubt a chemical combination found in nature is the telluride of gold. This com pound has come but three times under the writer's notice in payable quantities, viz., at the Mount Shamrock mine in the Burnett District, Queensland, at Mount Stradman, and at Block 45. At Mount Shamrock the gold was found as hessite (gold-silver tel loride with silver displaced by bismuth) associated with tetradymite (bismuth tel luride) and frenaelite (bismuth selenide). In this ore the gold was so finely divided...

Telluride Ores. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Telluride Ores. [BY J. COLLETT MOULDEN, A.R.S.M., F.G.S.] There can be no doubt whatever that one of the most important,-among the many interesting, and valuable discoveries made upon the Western Australian goldfields has been made in Kalgoorlie. In the KAL GOORLIE MINER, of Monday morning, is an article announcing the fact that gold in a state of combination, chemically speaking, has been idiscovered in the Block 45 mine. It has been found to exist in calcite as a gangue, as telluride of gold; now the telluride gold and silver ores are rarely met with, and if they occur in quantity we shall be brought face to face with a new metal lurgical problem, for the gold in them can not be extracted by amalgamation, but by chemical means or a smelting process, just in the same manner as the silver ores are treated by the Broken Hill smelters. By roasting telluride ores enormous losses by volatilisation are liable to occur, as has been proved in Colorado. A few words, therefore, upon the nati...

Mining Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Western Argus — 4 June 1896

Mining Notes. The Brown Hill mill is running much more satisfactorily since it was overhauled, and it is expected that this month's crush ing will be much larger than the last. A working model showing the Haycraft process of gold extraction is being set up in V. L. Solomon and Co.'s premises, and may be seen at work daily from 2.30 till 4 p.m. from Monday next. There has been a slight change in the officers of the Great Boulder, as was stated by us some time ago. Messrs John Taylor and Sons have been appointed consulting engineers in England, and Mr Zebina Lane has been made superintending engineer in W.A. Mr Garland, who represents the English engineer, has been making a careful examination of the mine for the past month, and will leave to-morrow for the Eastern Colonies, fully satisfied with the property, He will be in a position to advise his prin cipals of the mine on his return to the old country.
