CURRENT JOTTINGS [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 4 June 1915

CURRENT JOTTINGS Long preparation, ruthlessness in the use of their own soldiery, and national organisation are manifestly the factors in Germany's ability to keep going in this war as tltey have done and are doing. We are seeing what a tremendous power these conditions give. A -Government which will use its sojdiers without regard for their lives and a people ' who readily take places assigned to them industrially and Otherwise, to ! suit the needs of the time, cheer fully live on a dole of spud bread, and who believe what they ar? offi cially told, and nothing else except what is favorable, make a national force the equal of which, probably, there never was; such a manifesta tion of organised and scientific brute force certainly has no equivalent in history. Hut it is mostly brute force, and there it something keener edged tlian that, wkich is effective in warfare. This mighty . organisa tion or brute force puts on a strain in maintaining itself, a break in which anywhere will be ...

RURAL TOPICS AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT NOTES. PRUNING PEACH TREES. Where Wood Develops Rapidly. [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 4 June 1915

RURAL TOPICS ^ * AfilROtLTrRAl DEPART ^ MKNT NOTES. pruning- peacii trees. Where Wood Develops Hjapidly. The pruning qf several varieties of - the pearh tree where the soil condi tions are at all favorable to growth* has always been 'somewhat of a pro blem. It is .well known that during the first few years of life these make excessive growth at the ex pense of fruiting habit, and a sys tem that enables, the grower to get earlier returns from the tree must be considered a great advantage. ? -A Method Described. The method is to cut the. trees back to eighteen inches at planting, and at the first winter's pruning, four or five of 'the most upright nead. These are cut to a uniform height and .as great a length as the' - growing ^ranches are left to form « .season's growth will allow. On a : vigorous tree this will -be abtout six j ^eet. £188,773—Beer Consumption (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 4 June 1915

£188,773 — Beer Consumption ' (To the Editor.) Sir,— The above figures represont 1 3s the very large profit made during the half-year ending March 31st, . . 1915, by one of our city brewery firms. Should their profits be ther same during the current half year, *5j the annual total will be £377,546. - 41 This amount represents a fraction- , |f| over four sWHings per head for ev. ery unit of the population of M.S. IS Wales. When we consider there are 'over thirty other brewery firms iri this State, and quite a large nuiri ber of wine ? and spirit merchants also, their united profits must be . enormous. - From the Sydney press we read , Jj that the breweries of N..S.W. during ^ 1913, brewed 24,212,202 gallons of ' 8|| beer. The population in December of' 1 J that year was 1,809,400, which \ proves that th*e average consump- , «| tion of beer per head -was over 13 $ l gallons per annum. An average fam- g ily of five persons (if all drank jjrb portionately) would be 67 4- gallons. . . JA...

State Baking Project [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 4 June 1915

State Baking Project We have beei\ shown, by Mr. C. Towle, a print in pamphlet form of life address of the Attorney-General (Mr. Hall) to the Operative Bakers* Union. Also a letter in the 'Baking Trades Gazette' on saute by MrJ'C. ki n. rwutiii, ui aiaui^ » The pamphlet is by no means dry reading if not buttery, rather spicy in fact. The audience contained some hostile elements, and . the chairman was kept at it calling for order, and threatening fines. Tho Minister's argument, as all concerned should know, is that the trade is by the imutable law of progress on the eve of being trans formed by the introduction of auto - matic machinery. This will bo done by piaster bakers grouping, if the Government doesn't do it, as Mr. Hall proposes. In Canada and the United States automatic machinery makers come to a town, set up a plant in. . a factory with plate-glass windows througn which the whole process is visible, and they soon get so much of the trade that tne old system goes out into th...
