HORSE FALLS DOWN A WELL. (By Telegraph.) ADELAIDE, July £1. A remarkable accident happened on Saturday night to Allan Maefarlane's two-year-old colt Darracq. The youngster was beins led Into his box at Britannia Hotel, when the lad felt a sudden jerk and found that the colt had apparently been spirited away. It was, however, found that Darracq had fallen through a covering of an old well. Mr Dalton, says a writer In the 'Dally Mall,' the leading bridge au thority In England, remarks in one of his books that there is no game of cards is which skill meets with so sure and certain a reward as bridge, and no doubt Mr Dal ton's views are shared by a large number of players. 7ATAL HEAT WAVE. LONDON. July 19. The Benevolent Society's procession numbered 10,000 persons at Philadel phia. Over 3000, including spectators, were prostrated with the heat. There were 25 deaths and BO others are not expected to recover. The hospitals are full of patients. Many horses were also killed.

SENTENCES REVERSED. LONDON, July 19. The Higher Court of Mombasa (capi tal of the, East Africa Protectorate) reversed the sentences on Grogan and Gray for flogging natives, but did not order a new trial, as the term of Im prisonment had been undergone. [A cable message published on April 3 last stated :— Mr Grogan (president of the Colonists' ' Association) and four other white residents of Nairobi, Zulu land, have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from a month to seven days and fine for Hogging three negroes, who insulted white women, v and were not first punished by the authorities.]
