OPEN COLUMN. MR. C. T. COLLINS, J.P., ON ORANGEISM AND ROMANISM. (CONTINUED). [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 11 November 1882

OPEN COLUMN. MB. C. T. COLLINS, J.P., ON OHANGEISM AND UOMANÍSSÍ. (corfTlNl'EI)). MR. CULMNS has no', been forgotten ; and considering that he has also some sort of idea of a day of a perpetuil pcMce-in which, probably, he sees no or.inge hues-he will pard JO the departure from the in.iin suhject although, the divergence is not irrcvelant. Mr. Collins took his auditory down the " Corridors of Time" and invited them to " look tîown the vista of history with him." \nd what does he show them in the limited view he affords them ? Why, how the Church of Rome lins been a Church of agjrcssion and oppression ; hm he forgot to show how many sturdy Englishmen-who were not only of that Church, but were prelates-and yet served their country and their king Wore they did the Prince of a Rome. It is surprising that Mr. Collins should romnmbsr a' Beckett yet forget Langton; nor is this the on Iv instance of Roman Catholic-cither in England or in other countries-electing tn serve his temporal prince...

SPARKS [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 11 November 1882

SPARKS' Queer decision of the Sydney beaks. A man who puts up at an inn from Saturday to Monday, may not drink a glass of beer at dinner on Sunday, not being a bona-fido lodger. The wisdom of our Solomon's is getting alarming. Lucky man ! Mac Jackalone never works for less than £3,500 a year. That's how it is ho's so anxious that judges should have that screw ; because, John thinks, in his usual modest way, that it would never do for a grazier to have a better income than a C. J. I'm inclined to think, for all that, that Buchanan ¡8 in the right of it : tho Judges are well paid for what they do; and we should not bo led by tho nose bocause Vic toria chooses to give higher salaries. It's very handy for somo people that poor Laurisdon lies at tho bottom of tho ocean ; he, nt any rato, cannot contradict what they choose to say about tho loading arrange ments. When we lose a Goodenough, or half-a dozen skippers of South Sea traders, its a mere matter of gossip for a few days ; but when ...

PINS. Cum gra[?] salis. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 11 November 1882

I FINS. j Cum gravo salis. Another good man has gone to the Silent Land, I mean James Greenwood-although I ma} be pilloried for sayinç so. However, I have said it, nnd- I «tick to it, that the erstwhile member for Sydney, East, was one of. the ablest men Sydney teve)- had. James had the couraire to .expross his opinion, and when he found that he could nb longer con scientiously receive a minister of religion's stipend, he, like an honest man, threw up his billot, and turned his talents in another direction-to do good as a politician. Yet is he blabed for changing hts views ; and those who «vere full of Mr. Greenwood's praise, while he was a Baptist Minister, could sec nothing in him but vileness ; ability he had none ; honesty, nor shame, nothing in fact, hut a love of wrong doing; and to make' mattera worse, the man's infirmities were magnified to tbe utmost. This is tho kind of charity we experience, now-a-days ; the poor are visited heavily, while those who are suc cessful-let th...

PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 11 November 1882

PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY. Tuts popular holiday was well kept in Windsor, the principal attraction being thc Second Meeting of tile '? Hawkesbury Athletic Club," which was hold at Fairfield, it was an agreeable surprise to seo such a marked improvement in the ground in the short space of a few days-the whole length of the ground at tho upper portion of it, being enclosed with a wire fence. This arrangement is vastly superior to hav ing a surging crowd continually crashing in upon the runners. Moreover, on this occasion, the ground was already marked off, and thc distances measured, BO that only for the late arrival of thc train, which brought many of tho competitors, no time would have been lost. The first lace did not start uutii aftor twelve o'clock, so that each race was run later than advertised-which wa* no fault of the Committee. The officials were Mr. Vt'. MOS-JS, Judge; Mr. II. A. HcQuadc, starter; and a si ron? committee of management ; with Mr. W. F. Lindley as secretary ;...
