ZIONIST CONFERENCE. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

ZIONIST CONFERENCE. (Continued.) In spite of such persecution the Jews were jiowever still powerful in Asia, and existed in large numbers in Arabia where Muhammad first began to teach. . It is well known that many of the Koran episodes are based on Talmudic teaching, and although Muhammad himself fought the Jewish colonies of North Arabia and regarded the Jews as enemies, they nevertheless were more prosperous : under ' Muhammadan rulers than under Christians. | Palestine after the conversion of Constantine, and after the visit of bis mother Helena to Jerusalem had become full of Christian pilgrims, of monks and nuns, gradually increasing; the country was covered with Churches and chapels, consecrating supposed Bacred sites often from very ignorantly located ? as wiien St. Sylvia speaks of Rephidim as lying north-east of the Dead Sea, or the Bordeaux pilgrim places the scene of David's fiaht with G6!iah near Jezreel. The population was then ten times as great as at present, and the ...

The Poetry of Pentecost. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

The Poetry of Pentecost. A sense of grateful wonder comes over us as we contrast Pentecost as it is with what it might have been. Thunder and storm raged round Sinai, but there is no storm-note in our Pentecost ceremonies. The synagogue rested on the joyousness, the serenity of the Revela tion. Yet there was every temptation, towards cheap and dismal terrors. The synagogue might have crushed us with gloomy and severe rites, as though the weight of Sinai had fallen on us. But it rather lifted than imposed a load, and strewed flowers rather than fears in path. Pentecost marks the Mediaeval poety suggested to synagogue as to church the custom of decking the House of Grod at such a time vdth flowers . 'When the Amidah prayer ?was over, boys brought in fragrant bundles of fresh grass which they strewed on the floor of the synagogue. Roses and lillies first appear in Jewish places of worship in the 14th century— this particular custom of introducing cut flowers being imitated from the chu...

The Zionist Movement. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

The Zionist Movement. ? . The Zionist Movement is gaining ground 'daily, and each time that news reaches us tfrom the older countries it brings tidings of greater victories and more wondrous achieve ments In solidifying the masses that form the 'Jewry of the World. Some time ago we quoted .passages from Holy 'Writ which tend to prove that it is a mistaken and sinful course to pursue in attempting to stop the progress of the movement, and tnat it is no use waning in a state of inanition for some miraculous act of Providence to effect the return as prayed for ?with at least a pretence of earnestness in our daily devotions. The critics of the Zionist movement number among them many worthy gentlemen . who from their exalted positions have been shielded from counter criticism, and whose dictum has been received m many quarters without Shakespeare's precept being studied in that ' we should take each man's censure but reserve our judgment.' Persons troubled with the struggle for sustenanc...

Precept and Practice. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

Precept and Practice. Much has been written and spoken upon the subject of fraternal intercourse amongst the Jewish people, and the promoters of the various gatherings have been highly commended— and very rightly too — for their work. Apart from the heavy questions of the clay, fraternity and social inter-communication must receive better attention. It is useless preaching if the sermon is not followed up by example and precept. At present there are many oppor tunities for gratifying the social wishes to the young people, but what of those who are inclined to be studious, or even say, ambitious There is not one channel open for them to, expend their energies. If we take notice of the number of Literary and Debating Societies in Melbourne — even in Perth there is a very successful one presided over by the !Kev. D. I. Freedmaiv-and the progress the Jewish young people are making in 'Victoria, it is a shame and a disgrace that these matters have been allowed to go by default in Sydney....
