MINING TRAGEDY AT BENDIGO. SEVEN MEN KILLED. [Newspaper Article] — Daylesford Advocate, Yandoit, Glenlyon and Eganstown Chronicle — 5 May 1914

MINING TRAGEDY AT BENDIGO. SEVEN MEN KILLED. The Great Extended Hustler's mine, at Bendigo, was on Saturday night the scene of an appalling fatality. It was the most tragic yet I recorded in the autials of gold [mining on that field, involving, as ' it did, the loss of seven lives. ! The following are the names of the victims :—William Crowther Blair, married ; Robert Thomas, married ; George Forster, uiarried ; William Ryan, married ; John, Henry Campbell, married ; Leslie Martin, single ; Frederick Chinn. single. I The seven men, with F. Sewell, shift boss ; Michael Darcy, C Clapton, J Bowtlen and W. Brooks, went 011 the afternoon shift at 3 o'clock 011 Saturday. The unfor tunate seven stepped off the cage to continue operations where work had been suspended by the day shift in the rise and crosscut from the 1053 feet level, while the remainder went down to the work ings on the inverted reef at 1226 feet. Everything appears to have gone on as usual until about 10 p.m. By that time...

DOWN THE CRATER OF VESUVIUS. [Newspaper Article] — Daylesford Advocate, Yandoit, Glenlyon and Eganstown Chronicle — 5 May 1914

-DOWN THE CRATER OF VESUVIUS. To-morrow evening, in the Town Hall, the interesting and instructive scenic moving picture, Down the Crater of Vesuvius," will be exhi bited by the Star Photo-Plaj-s. This film is 1500 feel long, and depicts Mount Vesuvius as it is to-day, belching forth smoke and fume's ; and shows some wonderful and en tertaining views taken by Mr Bur lingham, of world-wide cinema camera fame, when recently descend ing the crater to the furthest point accessible to man. This picture represents what actually exists, and is true to life and nature. In this respect it, of course, differs from the very excellent picture, " The Last Days of Pompeii," which no matter how well displayed is after all merely a creation by the fertile fictiou-braiu of the- great novelist, Bulwer Lyttou. As this Mt. Vesuvius being screened is the same mountain which in A.D. 79 broke forth ill. volcanic- eruption and de stroyed Pompeii, this picture lends additional interest to all those who saw ...

Was the object of the State if J qppo'se and if possible crush these Catholic schools and colleges r Sir Alexander Pea cock praised St. Arnaud people for raising £400 for the high school. No word of praise was given to the Catholic-' body, which contriinned much more than trial amount in one year merely to provide the site and preliminary expenses in connection with the convei'U high school. Sir Alexander I'eacock boasted oi a medal he \V01e, inscribed " I'lay the game." The game played by the de partment resembled the Chinese game of euchre immortalised by Bret Hart...
