GIRL GUIDES ENROLLED. Oil Tuesday, evening last, Mrs. Keith Bowman, the District Commissioner ot the Girl Guides, visited Mount Barker for the purpose of enrolling the First Mount Barker Company of-Girl Guides. Altogether 23 girls were put through the necessary-: tests of .admission, and Miss Stella, AJ^ise was appointed Cap tain. - On Monday, about 20 of the guides paraded at the Anzac memorial service, the girls wearing their neat uniforms for the first time in public. On Saturday the company will visit Adelaide to take part in the guide and scout rally, and will, with other guides, be inspected Jiy the Duchess •of York on Saturday afternoon. The movement has taken a great hold of the local girls, and a very strong com pany is likely to "be formed here.

A LUCKY ESCAPE. On Wednesday morning two child ren had a narrow escape from death in Gawler Street, Mount Barker. The kiddies were crossing' the street near Bell & Co.'s grain store and came on to the road from behind a motor lorry. Mr. "Keith Ogilvy, an employee of Fidock's Garage, Was, driving a car up' the street at the time the children crossed the road. The driver did not see them till he was almost on top of them: ■ He swerved his car -with great presence of mind and jammed the brakes on hard with the effect that the car swung almost completely round and ran up on to the footpath in front of Mr. A. B. Fry's shop, the front of the chassis coming into con tact with a verandah post and stopping it. One of the' children fell right in the-path, but in falling miracuously managed to clear the car and escaped unharmed.

FOOTBALL MATCH. On Monday afternoon the first game of the present season was played by the Mount Barker Club, which received a visit from the Sema phore Centrals. «The blue and whites did not have a full eighteen and were compelled to play three or four school boys (one of "whom booted'a goal). The Mounts were <badly beaten by the .visitors who scored 13 goals J.0 be- ' hinds to 2 goals 8 behinds. Mr. W. Pry had charge of the game. The blues will have to give a better dis play in the association matches which commences on Saturday week. The game was played on Dunn Park, and the ground was very har4> and was hot at all fit for play as some of the players found to their sorrow, several minor casualties resulting from a fail. The association games are to be; played on- the grounds, but it will not be till May 28, when the Mounts play their first at home game.
