LUCERNE FOR SHEEP. NOT PROVED REMUNERATIVE. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 20 July 1914

SUOERNE FOR SHEEP. NOT PROVED REMUNERATIVE. Rochester district have used their lucerne for fattening sheep. In some cases the financial returns are said to have been very goody but speaking in a general sense the:crop (says the -"Age") should be putito a better use. Some settlers, fempted by high. prices offered for agistment, have overstocked to the lasting detrimentlof their lucerne crop. Where irrigators, inexperienced in the selecion and purchase of sheep, have bought at local markets stores for the purpose of fattening, they' have not infrequently acquired the very stock that they should have avoided. The net returns have, accordingly been light, and notwithstanding the large number of stock maintained haver really not proved remunerative. It Irhas been abundantly demonstrated that the con version of lucernie into mutton cannot be profitably undertaken ofi small irri gation holdings. On hthe other hand, where a farmer has several hundred acres of dry land, the possession near b...
