FATAL AFFRAY AT SANDRIDGE.   ---4--- A fracas took place on the Town Pier, Sandridge, on Thursday evening last, in which a man named John Walters Ryder, a boatman, lost his life through being struck on the head with a piece of wood by a Swede named John Johnson. Ryder was taken to the hospital, but died a few hours afterwards. An inquest was held on the body yesterday, at the Melbourne Hospital, by Dr. Youl, city coroner. The prisoner, who is a fair haired young man, was present, in custody, and seemed to feel his position very acutely. ATTEMPTED MURDER. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 20 September 1866

ATTEMPTED 31MURDER. (From Friday's Herald.) Information was received in Melbourne 'L.s night that a most desperate attempt was rlade at MIr. Wm. Sherrin's station, Byrre .urra~ at half-past S o'clock in the morning. i ..pears that a Welshman named Wm. 1P':Aell Thomas arrived by the mail coach, on \Weinesdav night, from GUelong, and yester day morning went to a but on the station, occupied b Mary Ann Bryan and her hus. band, and asked for something to eat. Some food was given to him, and he then accused Mrs. Bryan of not answering some letters he had written to her. She replied that she had not received any correspondence from him. IIe then replied that he had a revolver loaded for her husband and his mate. The woman was alone, her husband being away at work with his mate, and she became very much alarmed. The ruffian then stabbed her in the throat with the knife with which he was eating his food, inflicting so deep a gash in the left side that the point of the weapon passed out at t...

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the Free Press [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 20 September 1866

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the Free Press Sir,-In your last issue you very kindly called the attention of the public to the amateur performance about to take place at Seymour, in aid of the funds of the Kilmore Hospital. The object is a good one; and every person in, and connccted with, the district should come forward and contribute towards its ~rupport. There are many cannot afford to be annual subscribers, but, when an opportunity occurs, such as at present offers, it is the duty of everyone to aid and assist in bringing to perfection any legitimate amuse ment that will tend to increase the funds and support so beneficial an institution. But I am sorry to hear that a contradictory in fluence is at work, and has partially suc ceeded in its attempt to make the entertain ment a failure, simply because a concert is not agreeable to the wishes of a certain pious individual whose ranting and roaring eapa. cities (too often mistaken, by his sect, for eloquence) disturbs t...
