Vxta tine Uteri* mart at. I BLAGKALL, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27,1880. j THE discussion in Committee of Ways and Means last Wednesday week gave to (he advocates of protection an oppor tunity to unbnrtben themselves of their peculiar opinions. The first question brought before the Committee was the desirability of remitting the duty upon hemp and wheat. This, it will be per ceived, was introducing protection under the guise of free^trade, especially so far as wheat is concerned. Mr. Euro wisely remarked that it was unfair to pat« tax upon wheat while floor was imported doty free, for daring bad sea sons the millers suffered severely by it. It is certainly unjust towards the millers of this colony that they should be taxed «t the rate of 6d. per bushel on imported wheat, while the millers of other colonies are permitted to send flour into Queens land free of doty. But to encourage the ifheat-gtowing interest the tax was levied at the expense of the manufac turers. Now the advocates of prot...

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. October 15. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 27 October 1880

BRISBANE) AFFAIRS. FBOH OUB SPECIAL OOBKB8FOVDENT. October 16. So Rca is not a ghost after all. His pro longed absence, and the complete ignorance in which everyone seemed to be concerning bis whereabouts, .gave apparent confirmation to the eerie story told by the Clerk of the Council how he had seen his apparition walk into the Chamber on the first stonewalling night, and take his place on the Opposition benches. He turned op last night in the flesh, looking veiy much as usnal, and spoke on tiie subject under discussion. King and the Protectionists had an innings on Wednesday night, H'llwraith had pro mised them . chanoe, and accordingly gave them a Government night. Sing'has taken the wind out of poor Meston'a sails; as president of the association, the latter is de jure, bat the former has become the de facte leader. His resolutions were carefully enough planned to catch the support of as many different interests as possible. The increase of ad valorem on boots, ssddleiy, harness...
