Air Clarke defended the prisoner. The Crown Prosecutor, in stating the ease, said that on Saturday night, the l'lth March, the prosecutor IIy 1 iIT and the prisoner werd at the Criterion hotel, Beeehworth, in company with others, playing at cards. The prisoner lost, arid got A12 in I-Iyliff's debt. He then gaVc Hyliff a chcque for £19 12s, drawn by Kobcrt Smith, auctioneer, Be'ccliwotth, on the Dank of Victoria. HylifT returned £7 change, and they continued to play until Ilyliff* lost aiJ the money he had, and then told Hy liff that he had better destroy the cheque or it would get him into trouble. Ilyliff', asked why, and held the cheque in his hand, when prisoner snatched it from him, pushed it into hia mouth and swallow...

AN outline of the proceedings nt this meeting on Tuesday evening was given, in yesterday's paper, we now print a more lengthy report, repeating that the meeting was most numerously attended and was of a quiet, orderly, and well conducted affair from first to last. . Mr King was called to the chair and nt once introduced the candi date. Mr Kelly after a few preliminary re marks, adverted to the slanders which had been cut in circulation respecting himself, denied must strenuously that lie had ever been a paid secretary to any society in Melbourne, or that he had ever been provided with funds to contest the election by any numbers or friends of the late administration. The house was densely crowded, and grent -enthusiasm pre vailed. I'lio reception given to Mr Wood was most cordial.' (PROM OUR OWN CO«RKS£i)NDKNT.) 2nd April* ArrURIIKNSXOH Of ONE op tub MiniDKRBBS oy Mr JOHN Martin YOUNG.-On or about the month of September, 1855, Mr John Martin Young, of the firm of Jervis and Young of the Wimmcrn, -was travelling with a flock of sheep to the Victoria diggings, lie had with him two nv.Ti, one a fo reigner mid the other an Englishman ; and it will be in the remembrance of so mo of the readers of the Argus that Mr Young suddenly disappeared, nnd that he has never since been heurd of, and that the two men who were with him are supposed to have murdered liim. The affair created great excite ment at the time, and no efforts were spared in endeavoring to trace the ac cused parties.
