ADRIFT IN THE PACIFIC. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 5 July 1879

ADRIFT JN THE PACIFIC. The brig Aloxandria of this port, which has been away on a cruise iamongst the islands of the South Pacific, collecting bbchc-de-mcr, copra, and other products, has returned after an absence of seven months, with a fair amount of cargo. The voyage, although prosaic enough in a good many respects has not been barren of incident. The Aler andria, in command of Captain IR. Hayes, with several passengers, left here about the end of November last and proceeded to the Solomon Islands, whence the party visited the Gilbert group, and several other islnmds nearer tile Equator, and having gleaned what they could, returned again by way of Stewart's Island and the Solomon group to Melbourne, In the course of aonlling at the islands, iMr Golding, the second mate of the brig, ets despatched in a boat, with a crew of four Kanakaes, to reconnoitre one of the Solomon clunter, but on nearing tile shoro there was a current running swift and strong, and in spite of palling and sa...

Wm consider it our duty to make a few t remarks with reference to the late ex traordinary proceedings which took place the other day at the Council Chambers, when the property of the shire was seized by the police to satisfy a small judgment obtained .bye mem ber of the forco'!in Petty Sessions for expenses incurred by him in the bon veyance of a lunatic prisoner from Alexandra to the Kew Asylum, and at the same time will review the circum stances under which these proceedings were taken. Some time since a man was arrested by Constable M'Neo as a lunatic, and brought before the Bench, the result being a remand for medical examination.. On his re-appearance, Dr Fergusson gave evidence that the prisoner was sane, and he was at once set at liberty. The man was again arrested by Constable M'Nee, and again discharged. Sm,--Duringgthe last twelve months, I have, on three different occasions, observed that constables, wlen proceeding with prisoners from Alexandra to Tallarook, per coach, the constable each time sat on the box seat, whilouhis prisoner sat inside. Now, sir, I do not think that is right, for it would be very easy for the prisoner to slip outof the coach when going up any of the steep hiilh, and the constable would not be aware of his escape until the next stage was reached. Last Saturday, there were two ladies inside of the coach at Molesworth, and an old man (who was very untidy) going down as a vagrant, su posed to be in the charge of a constable, who was airing his dignity on the box seat ; therefore will you be good enough o enlighten the public, through your valuable Journal, as to whether or no the cons...

CHIPS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 July 1879

C HIP S. I observe that several journals do me the htnor of noticing my " Chips," in, some cases having the good taste to acknowledge from whence they are copied, and in others omit to mention the fact! Just so, dear boy! Now the latter course, you know, is not the clean potatoo I To try and please everybody is simply a force! I generally speak out you know, but in doing so try not to offend I Still I do not always please, you bet! and get it hot when 1 really do not" deserve it I Sometimes too people take my remarks to themselves when intended for others, and vet I find upon due consideration that in most cases the cap fits, for you know "a guilty conscience needs no accus .ing," at least that is what they taught me at school a few years ago. I understand there is to be a per -formance shortly in aid of an old resi dent, who has been sick this many a ;day, and whose wife also is very ill. Remember therefore, friends, that in taking a ticket you do an act of obharity indeed! Whose t...

OPENING OF PARLIAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 July 1879

OPENING. OF PARLIAMENT:. The third session of the preseoe Parliament was opened-on" Tuesday .by' His Excellency thle Governor, the Marquis of Normandy. The number of spectators at the ceremony was, certainly much larger than on any pre, vious occasion. Doubtless it was the interest attaching to the first appear-:.) anoe of a now Governor which in a. great degree accounted, for the. numerous attendance. Probably also, the architectural beauties of the oentralR hall and the vestibule, both thrown, open for the first time to public view,. had something to do with the. success. of the display. It might also be sup. posed that the hope entertained that; the speech would contain a few. novelties, as the fruits of the ChioF Secretary's recent mission to England;. in some way exercised an inflhenco on. the attendance, were it not that,. as a, rule, the people who flock to see Perlils- ment opened pay very little attention, to what they hear read'. and. are on the look-out chiefly for what c...
