Thk ominous ni'e at w!«icli the Bat'iur^t bur lias of la ie \T&ii-s spread its' uuweloome pre seucc over this and corniguous districts, should loug since have prompted some more decisive auction than has actually taken place. FREEMASONARY IN NEW SOUTH WALES. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 28 July 1888

? » FREEMASONART IN NEW BOUTS WALES. ? -.-?'] The following is extracted from the Min utes of proceedings of the Grand Lodge of England, at tbe meeting held in the Free mason's Hall, Loudon, on the 6th of Jane, 18S8,itlie Earl of Carnarvon being in the chair — Brethren, I pass now to the second j *.. Eubject on which you, as a grand lodge, will ultimately have to be consulted, and in which you are distinctly concerned. It is perhaps within the knowledge o£ many in thiB hall that for some time past there has hardly been that amount of Masonic unity in the great colony of New South Wales which, we could all desire, for a constituted body has sprung into existence — a powerful body both numerically and from personal position — and that body subsists side by side with the District Grand Grand Lodge under the English constitution. All true lovers of Freemasonary ha?e deplored that stats of things, but till lately there seems to have been no satisfactory solution for it. It has been a pec...

BRITISH V. FOREIGN GUNS. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 28 July 1888

BRITISH- V. FOREIGN GUNS. An important contribution to the discus sion upon the state of our national defences appears in this week's 'Engineer.' Com parisons between our ships and those of other countrtes have been repeated ' ad nauseam,1 especially as they are all intended to point the moral that while the fleet is certainly strong enough to guard our shores, it is by no means competent to protect pur enormous commerce. The article in the * Engineer ' deals chiefly with a comparison between our suns affoal and those of foreign Powers. It points out that many of the breech loading guns of foreign Powers are not to be compared with our own most modern types, being inferior even to many of our muzzle loaderp. We have on ironclad ships 313 modern guns, weighing in all 4080'5 tons. Each of these weapons de livers its shot with the average energy of 500 foot.tons for each ton weight of gun, hence it all these guns were discharged, the, point energy of their projectiles could lift: 2,044...
