The Apologists of the Ku»Klnk. HOWEVER exaggerated the reports of Iww Ku-Klux crimes may be, there can be - iid question whatever of the serious dis* - turbance of many parts of the Southein States. In Mississippi, for instance, Gov ernor Alcorn declines to call. upon the National Government, but he asks special authority of the State Legislature to raise a force of cavalry to keep the peace. The ample mass of testimony in regard to the ' situation in North Carolina accompanying the report of Senator Scott is conclusive upon the point of the Ku-Klux terror in that State. And the story of the Ku-Klux revenge of the Stevens murder in South Carolina, as told in the-Cincinnati Com- \\ mercial, is illustrative of the condition of much of the Southern part of the country. Governor Scott appointed colored Coun ty Commissioners at Unionville,' a little town of a thousand inhabitants, and a company of colored militia were stationed there. A man named Stevens, who had been rich, but who ...

' President at Indianapolis—Sena* * tor Morton's Speech* ' ''• ^ -A large concourse of citizens attended the public reception of President Grant 'atlndianapolis on the evening of April 22d. A welcoming speech was made by governor Baker, to which the President responded as follows: i VI Ladies and Gentlemen : I thank you heartily for this cordial greeting, for I as sure you it is unexpected. When I left _ Washington, it was with a view of going - to Si. Louis, without stopping by the way but, on meeting your distinguished Senator (Morton), at Pittsburgh, he requested me to remain here during this day, and I con sented to do so. Expecting to see you, Kthe people of Indianapolis, turn to greet your Senator, and not expecting a greeting to me, I leave him to thank you in more appropriate terms than I could do, if I were to try. THB late Legislature'of New York was, beyondquestion, the most infamous legis- - lative body that ever disgraced the United States. It does not appear to have had a - single redeeming feature. From the open ing day of the session until its adjourn ment, it waa job iu the House and job in the Senate . Tammany controlled both, * and subsidized every man whose vote was essential to the success of its schemes, Blackmail, open and avowed, was^ levied on almost every corporation and interest throughout the State which could be - forihe purchase or the hire of legislative servants. Not one measure ot real public importance was passed special legislation was the rule, and the programme of its . enactment was submitted daily by the New York ring. After Irving was driven out, a new draft was made to buy \"Wmans. The bargain was probably an expensive one, if we ac cept its sequel as. aniridex to the mood of morose and desperate villainy which took {ead jossession of Tweed, and impelled t...
