To the Voters of the Senatorial District , composed of the Counties of Jo Daviess , Cook , Putnam , Peoria , La Salle and Rock Island . FELLOW CITIZENS : Having given my assent to bo a candidate i : i Ibis District for the Senate , by request , I have thought proper to communicate to you my sentiments , on p .-ineip es ,, ! vital intce-t , to ihe Slate and Union . Tho first is a question involving the independence of the state , and consequently ^ dividual liberty . The claim of the general government of right , to exercise ownership to the land and tenements , within the limits of this State , • . ¦ .: thout her consent , is nothing less thin the voice of Alexander Hamilton . We have the information , thitthe cliim of tho general government is predicated on claims surrendered by Virginia and other states , for the purpose of financo . I think there is no impropriety in enquiring into Ihe nature of those claims thus surrendered . It is not contended that their claims were real , ...

[ From the Genius of liberty . ) There is nothing easier in the world than tp get into trouble , and it seldom occurs that you get out of it without the assistance of a third person , and probably he will be a lawyer—hence the necessity for that useful class of citizens denominated attorneys . A few evenings ago I detected en old woman in the act of paddling off with a bucket of butter , which she had purloined from my father s dairy . As a matter consequent , I took her before a magistrate and had her committed for further trial . With all the formality of a criminal of notoriety , the old woman was indicted . The indictment run thus : You Hetty Spanker , stand accused of having fcloii iously , and by Ihe force of arms , taken , secreted , robbed , stolen , conveyed , paudlcd off or tried to convey , or intended to convey by force of arms , the property herein , and hereby charged , or said to be charged ; or intended to be charged . SFICEO Fisn . It is a curious fact , that since the Brig Java was stranded on Cape Cod near Nauset harbor , Cod fis . li have b » -t : i more abundant near the shore than was ever known , previous to the event . We are informed on creditable authority , that from the fish caught | ir , a small row boat in one day , nearly half a bushel of nutmegs , besides a quantity of cof- ; fee , was token . One fish , a real screamer , had no less than fifteen nutmegs in his calm basket ; and others as nearly as many . There n ust be terrible goings ou down below ; we should not wonder if they were about to celebrate a centennial anniversar \ on the Grand Banks , and that these sea foragers were the purveyors . The Brig Pacific went ashore recently near the same place , wilh a cargo of Molasses , and it would not surprise if they were Yankees enough to have a * iick at that too . — We hope , however , as they are all water drinkers , that no shark will persuade them to set up a distillery . â...

[ From the INcwburyport Advertiser . ] EXTRAORDINARY STORY . —A gentleman has furnished us with the following account of a transaction which took place a few years ago : —A respectable master of a ship , belonging to this port , was in London several years ago , and his mate obtained his consent to spend an evening on shore . He did not return till late at night , and assigned as the reason , that , as he was walking in the street , he was accosted by a respectable looking female , and after some conversation she invited him to accompany her to her house . She led him into a house up a court , which on entering the outer door , she fastened , and he was conducted by her up stairs ; on entering the chamber she fastened that door also , and sat some time conversing , when she got up and excused herself a few nioments ; she did not return until his suspicions were awakened that some mischief was intended him—he looked round , and found that he was a prisoner , the door was locked...

Disturbance at College . The Freshmen Class has been dismissed from Harvard College , for insubordination . The facts , as we understand , are these : Sometime last week the door of a room in Massachusetts Hall was violently forced open by one of the class . — The deed was witnessed by another , who refused , when called by the government , to disclose the name of his offending classmate . Persisting in his refusal to give any information , he was summoned , by legal process , to appear before the Grand Jury at Concord . — His classmates , deeming it unjust on the part ofthe government to use the strong arm ofthe law to compel him to inform against one of their body , expressed disapprobation by scrap 1 ing , coughing , fkc . during / the daily exercises in ihe chapel . On Sunday they were perfectly quiet , but on Monday morning renewed their expressions of displeasure , which were carried so fiir that the government ordered the class to leave the University until they might be ...

INTERESTING DISCUSSION . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 19 April 1832

INTERESTING DISCUSSION . CONGRESS ... HOUSE OF REP ., MARCH 16 . Mr . AOAMS said , that previous to the adjournment ofthe House , yesterday evening . he had given notice of his intention to request , that after the time during which he should be -obliged to be absent , under the order of the House , he might , for the remainder ofthe session , be excused from his services as chairman of the committee of manufactures . The speaker could inform the House , that at the time he was appointed chairman of that committee , he did state to him the reasons for wishing that another disposition might be made of his services in that House . His request had been founded on an impression , that ¦ for that particular service , other members might be found more competent to discharge its duties ; persons more familiarly versed in these matters connected with those duties ; his own public services having been for years directed into an entirely different line . The speaker at that time informed him...

[ Extracts from late Foreign papers . j AMERICAN COMMISSION . —We learn that a seizure of English woollen goods has been made fry the Custom-house of flic United States , on the allegation that the goods were entered below their real value , with the fraudulent intention of passing them at a lower rate of duty . The seizure having been appealed against , the Government has ordered a commission to be appointed to examine in England the cost of producing the goods . Several Leeds manufacturers have been examined on the subject , and no less than thirty-six written questions were proposed to them , calculated to elicit answers , showing the cost of every minute process of the manufacture . It is conjectured by some of our manufacturers that the seizure has been made , and the commission appointed , merely to furnish a pretence and opportunity for obtaining full information as to the modes and processes of the manufacture of woollens in England , which maybe of service to our American...
