The piece of ordnance, accoreling to Mi. Steward, a local historian ef North umberland county, was brought from Fort Harris (now Ilarrisbnrg) and placed upon the ramparts of Fort A ugus-ta in the year 1772. From there it was taken to Fort Muney, where it lemained uneil 1774, when it was Lroughi. buck to Augusta. In the year 1775, when Colonel Hunter was or dered with his command to report at Harris Ferry, the cannon was ordered to be spiked and thrown into the river, which was ilone, when the fort was evacuated. In 1 70S it was taken from the river by George and Jacob Mantz Samuel Hann and Henry Shoop. Several cords of hickory wood were burned in taking the temper out of the file with which it was spiked, so that it could be drilled out.
