x-e'S"WfrtS- J ; ' m She gaHjj torau. ASTOKIA, OREGON: SUNDAY AUGUSTS, 1SS5 X DISSECTION. Is an attempt to darken tlie -waters of debate by a cuttle-fish injection of confession'and avoidance the Orego nian begs the question and substi tutes som9 half-baked opinions rela tive to the ability of the article it apparently desire3 to criticise. Its remarks need dissection. "What is new in its article is not good, what is good is not new, and dodging the question at issue ..it resorts to the subterfuge of setting up a man of straw to knock down, It says its article was "designed to correct a mistaken impression." "Why then did it not confine itself to its muttons and not undertake to speak for the Columbia river? Even the possession of the dispatches and a wide list of exchanges from which to cull choice editorial utterances does not give our inland contemporary right presumptive or prescriptive to speak fortho river. It says "The Astorias finds a text for a long ti rade against this jou...

' iZtjr' T-'ffs-"1 Ul Slw gaUj JlMiorau. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY ..AUGUST 4. 16C5 SOME MORE CALCULATION. Yesterday's Oregonian lias an article supplementary to the one which appeared last Saturday in which the matter of cost of wheat shipments is discussed in a different tone. In the article the Oregonian makes a few erroneous statements, as usual, but it is not so set in the wrong as heretofore and even evinces a will ingness to concede the possibility of a different opinion, outside of its of fice, which is a good deal for the Oregonian and a favorable sign for future discnssicn. It correctly says, Hhe simple in quiry is, in which way can wheat bo shipped out of the Columbia river at least cost?" The statement follows that "the least money for which wheat can be carried from Portland to As toria in boats, is, say one dollar per ton." We would respectfully ask the Oregonian if it knows this to be a fact, or, if it is simply its own private opinion. A little farther on it says "Whe...

9 m H a gfoiwx w ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY..... AUGUST 3. 1S85 A HAWKEYEPS OPINION. TAiiKiNa about what ho saw out here tho editor of the Montezuma, Iowa, Republican, says: "We think tho people of Oregon and Washington territory make a great mistake by wanting only those with means to go there. The wealthy settle down in tho towns and cities and lire at ease and do but little to develop the country. That country needs the industrious laboring man who is not afraid to take off his coat and go to work. Labor will do more to develop the great resources of the northwest than wealth, for labor is the source of all wealth. Iowa would never have attained her present great ness had it not been for the sturdy pioneers, poor financially, but rich in indomitable pluck and physical man hood and these are they who will convert tho rich and fertile valleys of the Pacific northwest into happy homes and eventually into rich and prosperous communities. That coun try needs labor far more than it doe...

fz) She gatftf storiiw. ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY... . AUGUST C. 1ES5 A PETTIFOGGING CONTEMPORARY When a pettifogging shyster finds himself -without argument, without ability and without any apparent hope of winning his case he ceases to bluster, to call the opposing counsel names, and tries to throw discredit on the testimony that he can't contro vert. His brag gives out; his jeers fade away and he finds himself the laughing-stock of those who see his plight and who are willing to laugh with him or at him as occasion arises. His last refuge is to try to break the weight of evidence by impugning the veracity of the witness. This is contemptible in a lawyer or a newspaper man, but it is what the arrogant assailant of The Astosiax in the editorial columns of the Ore goniun has come to. After calling our arguments "rot,' afterstyling our statements "incoherent," "silly," and "stupid,5' he is now compelled to squirm and writhe in an effort to dodge what every one else sees his ignorance...

m F She Satftt Syrian, ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY AUG UST 7. 16S5 VEXUS AND JUPITER. Ox present evenings Yenus and Ju piter may be seen almost side by side sparkling in the western twilight. To the naked eye there is not much difference to be perceived between Jupiter and Yenus. But in a good telescope the difference is very great, and the astronomer knows that it would take 1,400 globes like Yenus to equal the bulk of Jupiter. Yet Yenus is only a trifle smaller than the earth. These two worlds now shining almost side by side in the sky are still more different in their condition. They represent two different conditions in planetary history. Jupiter not withstanding its enormous size, isi speaking in a geological sense, a mere baby beside Yenus or the earth. The telescope shows that its huge globe is still in the throes of that age of fire and vapor which precedes the formation of a planetary crust, and when the observer understands the magnitude of the forces at work there is hardly a...
