pei to:; .ans nad tnaspas. To persons uninformed by actual :o cervation. less seemn to be known of the geography of Opelousas and A tta':apes, than of any other por Lion of Louisiana, although this beautiful region was settled during .he last century. Notwithstanding the subdi. ision of these old coun ties, they ..re still recognized by their original name. Opelousas was the lhdirn term fo: d2rk water, and was probably Aiven to this country by its primitive discoverers, owing to the striking contrast which they perceived, in their migration south ward. between the dark earth and 'rater of Opelousas, and the Red River country through which they had passed. The cord Attakapas was the Ind:>.n expression for man cater; but we have no reason to believe that the predecessors of the white settler; in that beautiful conutry were practical cannibals, although soveral old French travelers record such a tradition. These two old counties, although they are now sometimes confounded, have alwa...

A Homesstead Laud Company. The great problem of the day is1 the devising of means to free onu cities of their surplus popnultion-,! and the affording sf o alortulit'ies to young and energetic u13n to work . the resources of the country .p to their face value. Their is plenty of. capital in the land, and the eager ness with which it is seeking invest anent at Birmingham, Ala., and all ,other points where it expects good retur.ns, demonstrates the fact that the philosolhy of capital is : "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." The question arises: Have the ,capitalists of New Orleans and ],ouisianta, in the absence of such ,elements as induce money to the points above mentioned, and neans by which they can draw a certain and rich harvest out of Louisiana ? They have, and that is by enabling the numberless energetic men in the overcrowded ranks of the city ocen },ations, to become till...
