I took no notes of what I -saw, although there were thousands of men and women going around with note-book and pencil in hand. It is eetotome (as thj Romans say) to ito mind some of the wonderful 1ingsb at the Exposition, and so in jr4i -ng are the .impressions received that, like unbidden, though not un weleome guests, they come trooping tbough the ha4s ofemory. his at...

This gentleman is very much incensed at The Herald and News, but he tells us we must not think he is mad. That is nice. We hope he is not mad. That would be too bad. He does not like it, however, because we denominated him a lesser light. Now really that was too bad, and we should be rebuked for speak ing thus of a star of such magnitude. Then evidently he thinks we meant him when we made some reerence to small calibre politicians. We called no names. But then these things are more matters of opinion. The Herald and News will say to the Hon. Mr. Duncan that it was not indulg ing in prophecy, nor was it intending to give any warning, nor can we conceive how what we did say could be construed as a stab in the back. If Mr. Duncan does not know it, we will say for his ben efit, that we are not in the habit of stab bing in the back, and w...

We take up a good deal of space this week in the publication of an address on this subject, delivered by the Rev. Bartow B. Ramage at the Commence ment of Newberry College last June. Mr. Ramage is a native Newberrian, but now a resident of Nashville, Tenn. The fact that he is a native Newberry boy will make the address of interest to his former friends and acquaint ances, but not on that account do we present it to our readers, but on ac count of its intrinsic merit and worth. It will well repay you for a careful and thoughtful perusal. It is well written and contains many truths that it will be well for us to meditate on and learn lessons from and thus be profited and benefitted. True, as Mr. Ramage says, it is not high birth, wealth or intellectual at tainments that make a man truly great. Not even genius itself does this for man, but after all...

ELBERT H. ALL ) Proprietors. Wx. P. HOUSEAL, S ELBERT H. AULL, EDITOR. ---E WBERRY. S. C. WEDIESD.Y, OCTOBER 4, 1893. Some one has been so cruel as to sug gest that there is a great similarity be tween the ideas and even the language of the great speech delivered by Congress man Talbert in Congress and one of the published speeches of the late Henry W. Grady. They go even so far as to sug gest that the language in some portions is almos identical. They forget some very old-and trite yet true sayings such as this: "Great minds often run in the same chan neL." Even away back yonder in Solo mon's time the wise man said, "There is nothing new under the sun." These critics should not be so cruel. Of course a man like Congressman Talbert would not get up in Congress and deliver one of Grady's speechee, though he might make extracts from it. The Register made the charge, and had t a great deal to say about it, that Senator Butler had recommended the appoint ment of a Republican as postmast...
