There are 18 Applicants for lands at the doors Of the land office awaiting the opening. No. 1 is Christian D. Wragge of Cass Lake, No. 2 is Charles J. Hansey of Cass Lake, and the third is Herman Strucke berg, formerly of Bemid]i but who now resides in Cass Lake. One woman, Mrs. Maggie Keefe, a restaurant keeper at Cass Lake, is in line in front of the land office and holds 12th place. New Orleans, Aug 16.The number of new cases and deaths up to noon shows a slight improvement the yellow fe\er situation in New Or leans. New cases continue to appear from day to day in the state, but there is no general or violent spread of the pestilence outside of the orig inal center of infection. Alabama and Mississippi continue free from the disease, three suspicious cases at Raymond, Miss., being pronounced not yellow fever. Dr. Ouiteras, the expert, predicts that New Orleans will be free from the intection in forty days The second death above Canal street in a fortnight occurred during the day. The victim was Joseph O. Only One Other of Its Kind in Ex isfonce Is Near Copenhagen, Demmark. An amphibious boat, which will be run on land and water, is the latest thing planned for Bel trami country. The vessel, it is claimed, will cross a lake with a load of passengers, run up on shore, and, without once stop ping, cross a divide between two lakes and again enter the water and proceed on its way. The boat of this kind which it is planned to construct will be operated on Big Turtle lake and Lake Julia, and on the contin ental divide which separates these two bodies of water. Ac cording to one of the promoters, the vessel will be made to carry about 50 passengers and will be run between Puposky and the lower end of Big Turtle lake, and it is possible that the line may oe extended to Moval lake down to Bemidji lake and to the Third street dock in Bemidji. Aug. 17 Bound over to the grand jury by Judge Bishop of Thief River Falls for taking indecent liberties with a girl, Ella Safford of that place, Frank Lemere, a balloon ist, who attended the recent Red Lake county fair, Tuesday even ing, attempted to commit suicide by taking a large dose of poison. The attempt was frustrated by the timely arrival of the police and the injection of an emetic. The case in which Lemere in volved is the sensation of the hour at Thief River.
