Mr. Parton, in the first volume of bis Life of Jackson, just issued, gives the following graphic description of the duel in which Charles Dickinson, a young lawyer of Tennessee, was killed by General Jackton, in 1806. Dickinson's second won the choice of position and Jackson's the office of giving the word. The astute Overton considered this giving of the word a matter of great importance, and be had already determined how he would give it, if the lot fell to bim. The eight paces were measured off, and the meu placed. Both were perfectly collected. All the politenesses of such occasions were very strictly and elegantly {•erformed. Jackson was dressed in a oose frock coat, buttoned carelessly over his chest, and coucealing in some degree the extreme sleuderness of his tigure. Dickinson was thevouugerand handsomer man of the two. But Jackson's tall erect figure and his still demeuuor, it is said, gave him a most superior and commanding air, as he stood uuderthe tall poplars on this br...

Domestic Items. [EXCLUSIVELY TO TUB APPEAL.] [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 23 March 1860

Domestic Items. [EXCLUSIVELY TO TUB APPEAL.] If ''books" can be seen "in running brooks, sermons in the trees and good in everything," why may not a bed-ridden editor cull items from tbe of his' chamber ? Let as try our hand, and ascertain. To show that we arc well cared for, we will state the fact that we have some fifteen sheets upon our bed ; they are renewed daily and weekly, and are taken from presses—not clothes presses—in all parts of our beloved State. The litter of papers and cards and books piled upon and strewed over our couch, demonstrates our litter-ary taste. (Original pun.) From our window we have a most exquisitely grand and delightful view of an architectural pile of brick and mortar, the handiwork of a Marysville arti/.an—two windows beautifully festooned with musquitoe bars, a chimney, a streak of smoke, and a sky the color of dish water. We ga?> upon that scene, in mutt admiration. "We shall allude to this subject again."—[ Calavera* Chronicle.'] In an...

Arrival of the Overland JUall. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 23 March 1860

Arrival of the Overland JUall. The overland mail arrived last night, with three days later news from the Ailautic States. We have come to the determination to publish 110 more of these dispatches direct from Fresno, till some modification be made in the business of telegraphing. It may be vastly entertaining to learn that a shoemaker in *ome obscure nook of the United States had collapsed and cheated his creditors—that a liquor saloon out west had been burned down, or that somebody's negro had slipped and sprained his ankle, but we are not disposed to pay $BO or $lOO every mail for such stuff. If the exchanges lay before 11s, and we had nothing to do but cut put the news we would consider it an imposition upon our readers to lumber our columns with such trash as is now flashed along the wires at such vast expense. We are prepared to pay the rates now charged, or even a higher tariff, for legitimate news, but two cents a word for a circumstantial statement of the financial distresses...

"HAVE WB A PORT AMONG US?" —Under the abfcve heading, the Sonora Age publishes the following, intended, probably, as a "hit" at the Washoe plines : You recollect tbe time So many started off? Thousands went stone blind And travelod to the North. It is a singular fact So many bravo and bold Should all come back. And all so badly sold. You may have a poet among you, but don't bet anything on it being tbe author of the above. It isn't him, and if he is ever hung for being one, he will die an innocent man. lie might be brought in guilty of rhvmeslaughtcr, with a strong recommendation to mercy, but of poetry in the first degree, never. OUGHT TO BE FUNNY. —The Minstrels, at the Sacramento Melodeon, have lately been playing the Sons of Malta. If they do it up in the funny style described in Frank Leslie's Pictorial, it must be awfully funny. We should like to see a disciple of cork go down the inclined rails and be tossed in a blanket. WHERE ARK ALL THK THEATRICALS ? It strikes us that a g...
