The first link in the Trunk road that is sure to traverse the State is the Folsom, running from Sacramento to Folsom, 22 miles, which has been in active and profitable operation since 1856. The second link, the San Jose and San Francisco road, 52 miles, is to be completed in January next. The third link will connect San Jose with Stockton 83 miles. This route will be surveyed the coming winter, and the work of constructing the road will be commenced immediatly after. The fourth link, a line running from Stockton to Copperopolis, will be surveyed next month, and books will be opened directly after by a company already organized. This road will pass through the richest and most productive agricultural district of the St...

Eastern News. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 5 July 1862

Eastern News. WASHINGTON June 25th. A dispatch from General McClellan's headquarters, dated 25th, says: Gen. Hooker this morning advanced his division, with the views of ocupying a new position. His troops met with a most determined resistance from the enemy until 4 P. M., when the rebels were forced to give way. During the day, everything indicated a general engagement. The loss on our side was about 200 killed and wounded. The enemy's loss is not known, but considered is equal to our own. The rebel camp in front of General Hooker was captured, and is now occupied by our troops. The ground fought for was a swamp with thick underbrush, beyond which is an open country. — The woods intervening between our troops and the enemy prevents the result of our artillery from being known. Efforts were made during the afternoon by the enemy to capture two Napoleon twelve-pounders, under Capt. Delay, which resulted in their being driven back with severe loss. The result of to-day is highly impor...
