New Years Day. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

New Years Day. "A Happy New Year—how many happy voices speak this time-worn greeting, ias another mile-stone is passed by the untiring traveler, Time, as he rapidly steal -s OB his march to eternity. To how few will the stereotyped wish prove a happy reality, aud to how many a solemn mokery, let those who have journeyed with us through the pa t year, and witnessed—-perhaps experienced some of its many painful vieis-i---j tudes, search the store house of mem ry for an answer. Buried amid the recollec--1 tions of bygones are many of the high , hopes aud brilliant anticipations which found a birth in the advent of the year lof Grace 1800. Many a heart which then J beat high with happiness, now lies cold ! and mouldering in its native clay; and many a hearth-stone which then sparkled with the light of dome-tie happiness is now cold and desolate. Thus it is in We'd chequered scenes— lie bright hopes of to-day yield the bitter fruit of misfortune to-morrow. — '•Who can tell what a day may...

Tulare Canal. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

Tulare Canal. San Francisco, Dec. 31st., iB6O. Editor Visalia Delta. To judge from various articles which 1 have seen, from time to time, in your valuable paper, the subject which forms my heading has engaged considerable attention in the section of country in which it circulates. A section, I will add, which is fast becoming of greater weight, and importance than nine Californians out of ten have any idea of. It may not be uninteresting, therefore, to your readers to know exactly in what position the project now is. On the return of the Surveyor who was sent up to estimate the work that would have to be done between Kern Lake and Tulaic Lake, the Capitalist! here to whom it had been proposed, decided not to engage in it. and by the Overland mail of the 14th inst., the original grantees sent the whole matter to the Eastern States, (Xew York, I believe,) with a view of obtaining there the means required for its successful prosecution. What the probability of their getting them is, ea...

Carrier's Address [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

Carrier's Address Did you hear last night the midnight chime, As it marked a notch in the wheel of time, Tolled a mournful requiem song, For EIOHTIBH Sixty, past and gone? And rrc the sound had died on the car Rang* merry tune for a Happy New Ykak. Old Year! now lost in Eternity's night— You began like this one, happy and bright— Gladsome voices welcomed your birthPeace to your ashes, you're gone from Earth. Dead—with your trials hopes and fears, Buried with all your smiles and tears. The custom is, when great folks die, To write a long biography— Rut longer, shorter, bitter or worse, Dry old prose or doggerel verse, The style and matter (I've heard folks say,) Depend on whether the work will pay. This you must know is my Benefit Day, Do you -ire the point.' I belong to the Phksn, And propose a brief Nkw Ykau's Audkkss, Jotting down the current events Not fur the matter of dollars and cents, But just a simple brief narration Of things in the County, State and Nation. THE OCEAN CEMETERY. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 January 1861

THE OCEAN CEMETERY. DR. W. VAN BURNN. A motelkt group are the ocean dead, In their tombs beneath the waves, Where the slimy weeds are thickly spread, To cover the lonely graves; Where the winds, like solemn mid-night bells, Are chanting a chime of wo, And spirits that live in purple cells Go wandering to-and-fro. Those dreamless sleepers, rigid sad cold. Are a pale uncoffined throng, Whose mournful dirges are sadly tolled By the waves that pass along; Some went down with the horrible shriek Of the blast which rang through the night, When the heavens a vengeance seemed to wreak, And the stars gave not their light: Some went down when the mutable sea In repose lay calm and still, When scarcely a breere danced by in glee, The indolent sails to fill; And the waters closed over their forms With a quick and fiendish leap; They sank to a kingdom free from storms— A fathomless realm of sleep I When the tempest is howling above, And the billows rolling high, These corses forward and backward...
