dossier McKellen and Sarandon go to war T Ian McKellen "The Colossus" may sound like the title of a forthcoming "X-Men" sequel, and given that veteran gay actor Ian McKellen is one of its stars and will appear in the forthcoming "Magneto," that kind of confusion might be understandable. But nothing could be further from the truth "The Colossus" — currently in pre- production and also starring Susan Sarandon, Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz — is, in fact, a period film set in South Africa circa 1899, at the beginning of the Boer War. Based on the novel "Manly Pursuits" by Ann Haries, the plot revolves around an ailing British colonist who believes that only the sound of English songbirds will cure him. When the ornithologist who delivers 500 of the requested birds to Cape Town falls in love with a female anti-colonial activist, they find them- selves in the middle of the dangerous, brewing war. The film is scheduled to shoot this fall, McKellen's "Magneto" schedule permitting. Beals car...

Robida switched license plates with an identi- cal car in Kentucky, but the color of the car is listed in the vehicle registration. "The cars were different colors," Kincade said. "That's how we knew it wasn't the right plate." After Sell's shooting in Gassville, police ran down Robida's car about 20 miles away. Robida lost control and crashed in downtown Norfork. Officers saw Robida and Bailey hug inside the car. Robida then shot Bailey in the head with a 9 mm pistol. Robida then shot himself, according to documents in the case. Perdue plans to appeal ruling on amendment Governor says he will call special session to craft ne amendmen if state supreme court has not ruled by Aug. 7 By Ann Rostow Contributing Writer Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue wasted no time in reacting to last week's ruling against the state's 2004 constitutional amendment. Governor Perdue, a one-term executive up for re-election this fall, asked the state supreme court to take immediate jurisdiction over the matter and issue a decision on appeal by Aug.7. Should the court miss this deadline, the governor pledged to call a special legislative session in order to pass new amendments. In that decision, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Constance Russell ruled that the proposal to bar same-sex couples from marriage as well as the "benefits of marriage" illegally lumped two questions into one, forcing voters to weigh in on both the issue of marriage rights and the separate issue of other legal ties. Had the legislature offered two distinct ame...

West Side students said a girl was allowed to attend the prom in a tuxedo. Mayor backing anti-discrimination ordinance Associated Press CARLISLE, Pa. — Mayor Kirk Wilson said he will ask the borough council to pass a resolu- tion in June or July that could, if the community agrees, lead to an ordinance banning discrimina- tion based on sexual orientation. A ban on discrimination against people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender would come only after community meetings and a review by the borough's legal staff, Wilson said. "The resolution would be first," Wilson said. "That's what this whole process is about, to determine what the community feels it needs."
