The Diversity of Unity u o u u X z i o J Forrest McMillan 1 Staff Writer j3Lt3fcTjf.'ft tfcy . v P 9HEciK7& WKsvSck vWTiSBM.'iJWPii 2HI 3?lw. J jL uJjpHiB According to Dean Linda Carlton unity is more than working together for a common purpose. In response to questions concerning unity she defined it by stating "Unity is understanding the differences we have as people. Understanding those unique qualities helps us to appreciate each other and celebrate the differences we see in others." Recognizing diversity is not only racial awareness. But being racially aware does not necessarily mean that one has achieved unity. Diversity is a very large umbrella that encompasses many other facets including cultural dif- ferences. Growing up in the North or South playing sports or music belonging to a club worshiping a certain way or place or simply being male or female are examples of just a few ways people are unique. In relation to the issue of unity on Hardin-Simmons' campus 27 Hardin-Si...

Cover Story Cont.... University life is an important learning environment for world issues. In a small university community packed tight with groups clubs teams dorms facets and cliques a person is sure to be guilty of or fall victim to prejudice or discrimination. "When I came to Abilene from the North" starts junior Amie Deacon "I just had to realize that people here in the South do some things differently than people in the North. I guess what helped me prepare for that was having to learn that people are different wherever you go." Learning to deal with such powerful issues in a college setting helps to unify people in universal settings in the future. Junior Cliff Medley adds "Leadership is exemplified in being uni- fied with others and understanding their different perspectives." It seems from these responses that Hardin-Simmons although somewhat divided on the issue of unity seems to want most importantly to become unified as students faculty and staff. Whether they feel we'v...

"Uncertain" is the one word in the English lan- guage that I don't like using very often. It emmits ir9 ?H .zoi.a Devon Traylor Staff Writer the idea of not know ing or not having a clear indication of a certain subject or subjects. In many cases it lines up as a precursor to ignorance. In my case it meant total ignorance of an outstanding and well respected man. When I first recieved my assingment to do a spotlight on Dr. Brunner I realized I had little or no now knowledge of this key figure in the English department! What I did know of him was limited to a few encounters and "rumors" circulated about him by his students. I knew Dr. Brunner as the professor who had one of the most difficult English Lit. classes the most sought after professor and as one of the most knowledgable. When his name arose in coversations about English words like "fascinating" and " astounding" trumpted from excitable lips as they were followed by praises and examples of his work and the impact he has had....

Pledging continued my favorite part of pledging." A future Sigma Alpha sister Amanda Pate says that she enjoys pledging a lot and that she keeps busy but looks forward to closer friendships and being involved. Pato also commented that all the Sigma girls are treating her very well during her pledge experi- ence. Many ask what pledging is really about. It is a time when all the new pledges meet with their brothers or sisters and have a five-week party learning all about their clubs' history with present members. No one outside of the pledge lines is for sure what really goes on. Animal House is a classic tale in movie form of a univer- sity with a couple of social groups that managed to get into a lot of trouble and treated their pledges badly. It is a positive notation that at HSU pledges have nothing but nice things to say about their pledging experience. Not all students at HSU participate in pledging and many of them have different opinions and ideas about the whole process. Jerm...

mn Sffli The popularity of movie soundtracks has become quite prevalent in recent years. With movies like Titanic Armageddon and City of Angels inspiring blockbuster soundtracks the trend is not surprising. It actually makes perfect sense. We coach potato Americans like to go to the movies to be entertained and depending on how much the movie inspires us the music lover in us will go buy the soundtrack. The movie Titanic was moving and caused great emotions. The soundtrack for the movie captures the event exquisitely. James Homer's instrumental movements make you feel as if you are on the ship from the first boarding call to the last doomed moments of it's sinking. The music captured on the soundtrack is mov- ing and enthralling. Of course Celine Dion's breathtaking vocals on "My Heart Will Go On" don't exactly hurt the project. Another recent big hit for movie soundtracks is City of Angels. Sporting such experts as U2 Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton along with new hot artists like th...

I will say that most of the nomi nees in the major categories are worthy of the honor. As usual though certain films were snubbed while How Willie Got His Groove Back emerged with 13 nomi- nations. To be fair I really enjoyed Shakespeare in Love. It was energetic clever and a lot of fun. In fact I don't even object to its being nominated for Best Picture. Thirteen nominations though? Some are justified though. Dench? Yes. Whether she's playing the Queen of England or the head of MI6 the Dame always impresses me. Although her part Is brief she more than deserves her nomination. Paltrow? Sorry but no. Yes she is lovely vibrant and charming. It's not a bad perfor- mance but not Oscar-worthy. Still SIL is a very good film worth honoring. I guess it shouldn't be said that The Truman Show was snubbed. It did receive recognition ...

You may hear Shane Naterman Matt Williams and Matt Stage dis- cussing the art of deciphering the opposing cathcher's signs. Matt Cooper Marty Smith and Matt Travis could possibly be giving a lecture on why the aluminum bat is a more formidable weapon on the grounds that its sweet spot has a 4:1 (width of baseball) advantage over the wood stick. If you are lucky Johnny Golden will be reminiscing about his glory days with the Rice Owls and his brush with a 5'6" Texas Tech play- er who received a fastball high and tight to the shoulder blades triggering a heated conversation at the mound. When reading through Webster's Dictionary and upon looking up the word "success" one may find sever- al definitions. For as many defini- tions there are even more different meanings on HSU's campus. After attending Mark Victor Hansen's lec- ture series several students began to ponder what their definitions of success were. Brandy Brooks a freshman says "It success is all about goal setting... about yelling 'Geronimol' as you dive head first into your pool full of goals and accomplishing them one at a time." Some assume that students on a Christian campus may have different ideas of what success means as opposed to students on a public university's campus. "It seems that a student on a campus such as this would be more likely to include having a Godly walk as an important part of what suc- cess is"says sophomore Jennifer Rosa. "It is not because we ...

iiiiii Devon Traylor Staff Writer Growing up is hard to do! It is even more difficult growing up in this ever-changing and expanding world to one day realize we don't have the skills to survive. Today we as Hardin-Simmons University students stand on the brink of the new millenium and are forced to ask ourselves a difficult question. Is the col- lege we chose HSU preparing us for the real world? Before we can fully examine this idea we first have to look at the various reasons people choose HSU as their col lege above all others. Some came for the Christian atmosphere wishing to worship God freely and fellowship with those of their same faith. Some came because of tradition or socail status based on their parents being alumni or because of their family's class standing. Others came for the exceptional education and atmosphere HSU could provide. The remaining like myself arrived not knowing why in the world they were here at all! Upon coming to HSU I had various expectations just as ...

Bpp m T M m. & ? Prayer Warrjors iN CybERSpACE J Does "Prayer Warriors in Cyberspace" sound like a trivialization of the prayer ministry at and through Hardin-Simmons University? Perhaps it does but nonetheless it describes the ministries which are growing out of a fusion of the Christian faith and the telecommunication technologies which exist at HSU. In short HSU's Prayer Ministry is taking advantage of the power of digital communication. Organized prayer already takes many forms at HSU including what is described as an email prayer tree. However it may soon take another step into the Information Age with the arrival of PrayerNet and the beginning stages of Inter-Collegiate Prayer Ministry in the works. These two ministries will be added to the ministries which the Baptist Student Ministry Prayer Team led by Chris dayman is already engaged in. Palmer McCown Director of Religious Activities and Sandy Kinman Internet Services Assistant Manager are currently working on an website...

HSU Students Study Abroad- Home Away from Home Do you remember that joyous day when you packed up and headed for Hardin-Simmons University? You could not hard- ly wait to be independent to be on your own. It was the excite- ment of being away from family and friends in effort to start all over again and make new friends and lasting memories. For some of us that day was not that long ago. For others it has been a few years and is just a memory now. There are a few students at HSU that have had the opportunity to experience leaving home all over again. This time their home is here at HSU and their new home for a while is in another country on the other side of the world. These students discov- ered a "New World" while studying abroad. Hardin-Simmons University offers three colleges that students can choose from to study abroad. One is Harlaxton College in England another is Salzburg College in Austria and a third and new program is Cambridge University in England. Harlaxton and Salzbu...

.'4 The year 1998 gave us the usual cinematic grab bag of heroes villains explosions and car chases. Now most of the time I love that. Every year however I look for films that challenge that really make the mind work and that either take me somewhere I haven't been before sug- gest a new way of looking at something familiar or just give me a good time. Submitted for your approval: the year's best movies. I'll start with the number one flick; the rest will be listed in alphabetical order as it would be very difficult to rank them. Please remember that this is just my opinion and I did not get a chance to see everything that came out. Also bear in mind: it's only the movies. The Best...
