ANDERSON'S CREEK. July 1st, 1884. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 11 July 1884

ANDERSON'S CREEK. (FPRoi OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) July lst, 1881. Two nmeetings of miners, with respect to the taking up 20 acre bloks on the Nillumnhik Falnuers' Commlan, were held last Saturday week in Mr. Trezise's. large room. One was a rathelr noisy one and ended with sotme dispute as to the show of hands respecting the peti tion, and the one, as reported in this issue, a large majority of miners antd others carried the anmonldmeint :-Tlhat outside the "pink line" the lands: should be thrown open for selection.. Not one word at either meeting was said in reference to the timber on these. lands. As soon as a man fences his 20 acres, the land has ceased to be a. benefit to mniners and others. However,. to get the pink line reserved is somn- thing; I am told that about S2 signa-. tures were and could have been oh-. tained for the petition, but they did. not turn up at the meeting. The Good Hopmn tunnel is now, through; and I expect they will be. crushing shortly. The. dyke shows goo...

NOTES FROM LILYDALE. BY A BitLous CoNTleuToit. le is the happy man, Who, doomed to an obscure, bhat tranquil state, Is pleased with it,snd were he tree to choose Would make his fate his hloice. Oliver Goldsmith, on more than one occasion, has painted in glowing, but homely colours, the calm and peace ful life of a country curate. lIe is represented as a maio with a great capacity for enjoyment in the simsple study of nature, a min iof saiall needs, but of a saintly and benevolent disnp sition, and, moreover, he is usnually de picred in tihe enjoyment of a large family and a very smll stipeod, andl his social standing us Ii;ceod by this genial authority is unnssailable. On the other hand, M1'Anlev in his incom parable history of Eingl?n!l tells us of a time when ordaine.l clergymen of tihe established church were in very low water indeed (uxceptiu;C such as were very high' "in ecclesiastical authority), and socially hpraking thy were about on a par with a mudernl aboeblack.
