THE Wagga Wagga Advertiser "This is true liberty, when freeborn men, Having to advise the public, may speak free." MILTON. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1875 [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Advertiser — 27 November 1875

THIS ' Tliis Is truo liberty, tvlion freeborn men, Having to ndvlso the public* may apoak free." Mir/roN.: SATURDAY, XOVJCMBKK 27, 1875 Anyonr who takes tlio trouble to wade through the reports, appearing daily iti the Herald, of the proceedings of our Legislative Assembly, cannot but have; noticed the ridiculous extent to which the question-asking business is curried by members'. Not only are. a host of questions put upon paper, but, what is unfortunately worse, they are, as n rule, utterly value less in character. Upon the most childish of pretexts, some heaven-born genius of a • legislator sits down, and, with all the solemnity befitting a momentous matter, scribbles a dozen or so of queries, which have nothing but sound to recommend them to the consideration of sensible people. It might be excusable on the part of question-asking members if they, by exercising their stupidity, were only to waste their own time ; but when it is remembered that tho time of Parlia ment is wasted, t...

THE CAUSE OF PROFUSE RAINS. (Scientific American.) [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Advertiser — 1 December 1875

THE CAUSE OF PROFUSE RAINS. (.'/Scientific American.) Everyone knows that the heat of the suu rnisoB water from tbo oartli in the form .of vapour,, which becomes clouds, that float around, and at last disohargo tbo water of which they consist j this simply is the cause of rain. But wo ask tho reader if he has ever considered that the amount of water evor evaporated by the sun de pends on the lattor's heat? If this wero increased more water would evaporate, and more como down ; and if it were diminished, loss would evaporate and less would como down, and the amount of rain would dimin ish, as it is certain that the water which comes down as rain must have been previously raised by tho hoat of the sun ; as the sun is sometimes ob scured by spots, it must bo supposed to {jive loss hoat, arid 'therefore cannot raise so much water as vapour ; and uudor these circumstances the sua cannot properly be the cause of extra ordinary heavy rains and inundations. This is the theory advocated io s...
