DEATH BY DROWNING. [Newspaper Article] — Riverine Herald — 20 November 1869

DEATH BY DROWNING. On Monday last an inquest was held by Mr Noyes, the coroner of the Deniliquin district, on the body of James Campbell, a carrier, whose death by drowning in the Gulpa Creek we have already reported. Campbell was only twenty-two years of age, and was a resident of Pyalong. The inquest was held at Hill Plain. It appeared from the evidence that he was on his way from Deniliquin to Echucn with a load of wool. He camped at the Gulpa Creek, and was crossing it in order to drive back his bullocks, with his clothes tied in a bundle on his head. In the middle of the creek he was seen to throw up his arms and to fall bnckwards, when he sunk and did not rise again. It is thought he was choked by the fastenings about his throat binding his clothes. A verdic; of accidental drowning was returned.
