BOOLIGAL. July 8th. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 9 July 1873

BOOLIGAL. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Julv 8th. The Booligal Town Pump.— In a small township Irke ours, minus a municipal body, it is surprising how energetic some of the townspeople are in doing anything for the pwblic weal. A striking instance of this fact has lately been exhibited here. We happen ViOtT-l o TTAHTT fvlK-v + 4-T* 1..]-^ .nLI. ? ? 11_ -* j/it-wijr mtxcy vvujuu jjj generally dry in the summer, but when the Lachlan rises to a certain height, this lake becomes filled with water, and being only a stone's throw fiom almost any house in the town, is very available and commodious to the towns people for that necessary element — water. This lake is filled from the Lachlan by^ a very narrow passage ; and when the water reaches flood level, it will be quite an easy matter to dam up the passage, and thus leave a beauti ful reservoir of water for the use of the towns people when the Lachian recedes. MELBOURNE. July 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 9 July 1873

MELBOURNE. J (FROM OUR OWiV CORRESPONDENT.} Julv 4. Most persons consider it a very enviable position to be a Minister of the Crown, and undoubtedly it is in the generality of cases, but there are exceptions to eyery rule, and our Minister of Education must claim to be that _ exception. That the honors of Parliament are dearl}' earned in some instances, must be apparent, in the case of Mr W. Stephens, who is one of the Crown Law officers, and Min icfhor nf 1 1 o it i n rv tn o-ffzin/^ fi-» ? ? 'his large private practice as a barrister. The position of the teachers as affected by the new Education Bill, has occupied the atten tion of the Assembly. The great cause of j complaint is that the salaries of the teachers, j especially those in the higher classes, have j been reduced. That the Act promises to work well may be inferred from the fact that ! the average attendance at the State Schools i increased from 0G.439 in December 1872, to j 99,783 in March 1873. That parents are alive t...

TOWNSHIP GOSSIP. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 9 July 1873

TOWNSHIP GOSSIP. The building committee of the Roman Catholic Church have at length bought a site I for the building of their chapel, and tenders for the erection may soon be looked for in the local journals. The committee have done well in their selection, the ground in question being situate in a central position, and em bracing in area one acre and a half, and hav ing two frontages. It is to be hoped the buildinsr will soon be commenced, as the want of a chapel has long been felt by the mem bers ot the Roman Catholic denomination in the district. Whilst talking of Church mat ters I may mention that I see the inhabitants of Narandera, or some five of them, I believe it states, on the late visit of Bishop Thomas there, subscribed the sum of .£30 towards the stipend of a Church of England minister there — not bad for Narandera, that consider ing we of Hay only managed £75 at a meet ing held here for the same purpose. EPITOME. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 9 July 1873

EPITOME. A Vaccination joke. — The Ararat Advertiser lately told the subjoined amusing story of tlie mistake made by a Government vaccinator ' He was hold ing the instrument upon which the vaccine was, and landing tlint his nose was irritwted from some cause, in a fit of absentmindedness he used it therewith to scratch the organ. The result was (hat in the due course of time the nnse delivered itself of a fine healthy pustule, which was of unusual size and promise. This, of cmirse, rendered a bandage necessary ; but the utmost exercise of ingenuity could not well devise how it was to be properly affixed. The doctor went about some days with a rather cleverly .adapted kind of~cover, aud his friends said he carried bis nose in a sling.1' Recently, at (he Bank of New South Wales, Gym pip, a sum of £000 was deficient in the cash receipts. It is supposed that the money, in large notes, must have been abstracted from off the bank counter whilst the accountant had momentarily turned his ba...
