Potato Growing. INSURANCE AGAINST DISEASE. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 31 July 1915

Potato Growing. INSURANCE AGAINST DISEASE. For a generation or two the Romsey district has been noted for the quality of its potatoes, At one time the rich local soils yielded abundant crops, but the aver age receded a few years ago. This cir cumstance caused growers to amend their policy, and already, as a result of green manuring and the application of a fertilis ing mixture, the best farmers have in creased their returns. To-day the Rom sey acreagc yield is still well below the old figure; but it is contended that, to some extent, what is lost in quantity is gained in quality. The latter character istic, however, is not so much attributable to any difference in the soil as to the careful methods of production followed by the growers. This point can be illus trated in a description of the operations of representative farmers, Messrs. Cook Bros., whose large property is about two miles from the town. The soil varies a good deal, the outstanding types being a red chocolate and a gre...

Recruiting Campaign. MEN ARE STILL NEEDED. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 31 July 1915

Recruiting Campaign. MENiARE STILL NliUDED. When is the war going lo end ? Tliia is a question frequently heard, and truth compels the answer that the end fa not yet in sight. Germany has been beaten so far as tho objects with which she brought on ihe conflict arc concerned. She is not yet beaten to such an extent that she is witling to consent to the only pcaco terms that the Allies will accept. Germany went to war for certain purposes. To attain these she has deluged the world in blood. She wanted to be the world power. Her word must be law throughout the earth. She wanted not only a military and naval supremacy that must be unquestioned, but also the position as a colonial power held by Great Britain. To these ends she wanted to annex Belgium and Holland, to hold the northern portions of Kruucc-in cluding Calais-so as to perpetually threaten tho coasts of England, and to take Austra lia and South Africa as the prizes of battle, ('aria was to be seized as a preliminary. Russia was...

General Summary. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 31 July 1915

, General Summary. 50,000 people visited tho Fleming ton camp on Sunday. Our fate is beiog settled in Europe, and it is there everyone must! go who responds to the duty call. The need for exercising more economy in living at the present time is empha sised by the State Attorney-General. Owing to the scarcity of rabbits in the Elden district foxes ate killing young lambs and doing considerable damage to sheep. Tn response to an application from the residents of Bistnark, in tho Calla wadda district, the Stuwell Shire Council has given its approval to alter the name to "Kitchener." Grubs have been playing havoc with tho grass in many paddocks at Terang, particularly in the richer and warmer country, where extensivo patches of ground are quite bare. The Dardanelles are about 33 miles long. In places they are some four or five miles across, but in one place, the Narrows, they are only 1,300 yards. The average width is about three miles. WOOLSTHORPE. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 31 July 1915

WOOLSTHORPE. The Shire Council has lately devoted some of its attention to Woolsthorpe. A number of tree-guards have been pro vided, and trees nre to be planted shortly. They include oaks, sugar gums and gypso phile triancthos, nil suitable for street ornamentation. They were obtained through the instrumentality of the local head teacher, who takes n keen interest in the welfare of his district. The Council has also made a fine ap proach to the hall. This is a gravelled motor or carriage drive, and must en hance the attractions of the hall, as visi tors to entertainments may now drive right to the gates and thus enter dryshod. The space in front of the hall is also to be made into a lawn by the committee. Recruiting has occupied the attention of the residents lately, and several young men have passed the necessary examina tion and have gone into camp, while others will shortly follow. Messrs. J. and A. Lindsay, W. and J. Latta, E. Richard son and J. Gardiner have volunteered, while ...

TIT 15 fvotoit Routine! AND fHfaiwr gjrtU |Mwcatc, PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY SATURDAY MORNING JULY 31. Current Topics. At the Pops to-night there will be one local item, the Parisian Company appear ing by special request. The Illowa State school children have been in the habit of holding penny con certs each month in aid of the patriotic funds, and the parents having expressed a wish to be present, the last concert was held in the evening instead of the after noon, taking place last Wednesday. A charge of sixpence was made for admis sion, and the proceeds reached the satis factory amount of £4 10s., which will be devoted to "Australia Day." A really first-class programme was arranged on short notice, the general opinion being that it was one of the best concerts ever given in Illowa.
