MELBOURNE. July 31, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 4 August 1875

MELBOURNE.' (FROM OUR OVfX CORRESPOKDEKT.) July 31, 1875. The debate on the budget wliich has been dragging its slow nnd uninteresting length along for the past tort night, has at length eome to a conclusion, nua the Go vernment hnve enrried their incre'ase of duty on spirits by a majority of one, the numbers standing 'at the close 37 for, nnd 36 ngninst. This close division has induced the Ministry to consider their position, and it is expected that they will place their resignation in the hands of the Acting-Governor. Indeed, there is no othcrcourse open to them if they have any sense ot honor and dignity. We shall have then another shuffling of the pnek, and all the excitement consequent on n change of our political rulers with the lisnal amount of left-handed compliments and disappointed hopes, &c. Who tho coming man will be it would be hard at the present moment to say, but it may be safely said that he will be taken from trie ranks of the Liberal Free-traders, and that...

A Ball in Hid of the Hay Hospital was given by the Murrii'rabidgee Lodge of Freemasons located at Hay, The night was fine, and tho Terpslchoreaus to the num ber of between 30 aud 40 couple, arrived comfortably nnd in good time. On ontering the hall one waa struck by the tasteful decorations, consisting of floralwreaths uiiil Masonic banners and emblems, all of deep mcauiug to the initiated, and very pleasant to look up even from an outsido view. Praises wore lavished upon' Bro. Mit chell Tartakover, who under somewhat adverse circum stances, had effected the cnfoelishmcnt of the hall. We notice, with pleasure, that Mr W. L. Smith, with his son Willie were there to discourse sweet music ; their services being freely given to a cause so good as the al leviation of pain aud suffering, so well effected at the Hay Hospital under the able and nttentivo Dr Gordon. SYDNEY. 30th July, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 4 August 1875

SYDNEY. ( FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. '- ' 30th Julv. 1875. . The case of conspiracy v bribery, or cross-fire of im putation, has been a little further advanced. On Fri day 23rd, Mr Parkcs, whose resolute silence on the even ing of Mr Garret's charge, irritated his opponents and disappointed his friends, made a full statement of what ho hnd done iu the mntter. It nmounts to this— ho henrd that Mr Scrimes paid money to Mr Garrett in 1870, for his influence in getting him n situation; nnd he thought it was the duty of n member of Parliament when he heard such charges against another member, to examine into the truth. So Air Parkcs, after some difficulty, obtained a meeting of Scrimes and Dransfleld with himself at Mr Sutherland's house. This was nbout seven weeks ngo. Hearing Scrimes1 statement, Mr Parkes felt it to hi his ' duty ' to go further, and get sn nffidnvit or declaration in writing from Scrimes, nnd therefore appointed a meeting at Mr William Bnrkcr'a office, where n stntut...
