TRURO. [From our own Correspondent.] December 21, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

TEUHO. pTrom our own Correspondent. J December 21, 1878. Harvest operations are being carried on "with little or no hindrance, tlie weather being all that can be desired. After many en quiries I find that, as in many other districts, the yield varies considerably even on adjoin ing farms. Some of our neighbours are re joicing over ten bushels per acre, whilst others are lamenting over only five or six. We do not hear so much about red rust here as from the Northern districts ; but as many of the farmers are only beginning to clean up, it is perhaps premature to judge as to what may ia reality be about the average yield in this A little "wheat is now coming into Ti uro, and the general quality of it seems to be good. Some improvements are going on in the township, in the form of laying out footpaths on each side of the street, but as the ground on one side has hitherto been so much higher than the other, some of our neighbours will require a ladder or some other contrivance to reach ...

OUR CITY LETTER. [From our own Correspondent.] Adelaide, December 21, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

OUR CITY LETTER. [From our own Correspondent.] Adelaide, December 21, 1878. Christmas is now near enough, for me to wish you and all your numerous readers the compliments of the season, in the words of j the immortal Rip Van Winkle " Here is your goofe healt and all your family's, und may dey all live long and brosber." Indications of the approach of the festive season are shown in the lull in business, different and distinct from what is understood as dullness in trade, and which generally precedes the great annual holidays. At the same time the shops are busy in their preparations, and every year fresh novelties are introduced, and the shops look gayer and more gay a6 each suc ceeding Christmas comes round. The large increase in the population every year adds to the general animation, of the season, and when the people of Adelaide turn out en masse for a day's or an evening's pleasure the sight is one to be remembered. Last Saturday evening going home about 8 o'clock I believe I s...

LOCAL TELEGRAMS. [From oUr City Correspondent.] Adelaide, December 23, 3.0 p.m. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

LOCAL TELEGR VMS. [From oUr City Correspondent.] Adelaide, December 23, 3.0 p The Australian Cricketers arrived this morning, and received a most enthusiastic reception. The Town Hall was crowded. The Major and Councillors, members of tlie Ministry and of both Houses of Paliament, members of the Cricketing Association, and other prominent citizens, occupied places on the platform. As the team entered Mr. Oughton played on the organ " See the Conquering Heroes Come,"but. the spontaneous cheers with which the spectators greeted them completely drowned the strains of the instrument. The Mayor read an address, to which Captain Gregory and .Mr. Conway replied. Bells were rung, and the cheering in the streets was immense. Bunting was displayed in every available place. The Union Jack floated at the Post-Office, and the Royal Standard at the Town Hall.

The Kapunda Herald. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1878. MR. A. TOLMER. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

C|)e 3&ammtia TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1878. ME. A. TOLMEB. We mentioned a short time back it appeared to us that the gentleman whose name stands at the head of this article had been very unfairly treated by the colony, as considering the im portance of the services he has ren dered, and the fact that the larger share of his energy and strength has been devoted to the interests of the colony, he undoubtedly ought to be placed in such a position as would enable him to spend the remainder of his days in that degree of ease and rest to which his arduous labors in the past entitle him. "We have on several occasions expressed pur disap proval of the system of granting pen sions to Civil Servants generally, and we have not altered our views on this matter, because we think that when employes receive fair compensation for services rendered either to private firms or to the Government, they have a right themselves to make provision therefrom for the requirements of old age, or for thei...

SADDLEWORTH. [From our own Correspondent.] December 20, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

SADDLEWORTH. [From our own Correspondent.^ December 20, 1878. Harvesting operations are now in full swing, {but from what I can hear the crops are not turning out as well as was expected, the grain being small. The local Rifle Club a short time ago re ceived a notice to return their rifles on or before the 21st December, but since then they have received an extension of time, and are allowed to hold them until March 1879, when they must return them, which has pleased the members, as they are to have a prize match on New Year's Day. A post-card was received from the Inspecling-Officer last week, giving an extract of the Eifle Act of 1878, requesting to be forwarded the names of all those who are willing to enrol under the Act. A meeting was held in the Council Chamber on December 14, and after discussing the Act as far as they knew, twenty-four members of the Saddleworth Rifle Club gave in their names as willing to join, and no doubt that there will be a number of other names handed ...

CHRISTMASTIDE. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

CHRISTMASTIDE. We have now reached the day to which the little folks look anxiously forward for & period of six months, it being on Christmas Eve that that beneficent but mysterious giver of the good things which are so much prized by the juveniles finds his way into so many of their bedchambers, and despite the dark ness which is supposed to prevail around, manages not simply to find the stockings of the peaceful slumberers, but also to cram therein presents of all sorts and sizes, pre sents of which no one knows whence they come, but which nevertheless despite the saintly messenger by whom they are brought savour strongly of terrestrial manufacture, and strangely enough in most cases each one'6 stock* ing proves to contain just the very things for which a longing had been expressed. This of course goes to prove the saintship of St. Claus, for how else could his knowledge he so extensive, and his power of supply be equal to that knowledge. But it is not alone to the little ...

MELBOURNE. [From our own Correspondent.] December 11, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 24 December 1878

MELBOURNE. [From our own Correspondent.] December 11, 1878. In the first place, as tnis will be the last letter of mine that you will insert before Christmas, allow me to wish every one of your readers a very merry time of it. In fact, " I loots toward you," and with Rip Van Winkle hope " you may all live long and die happy." To my mind Christmas is the holiday season of the year. In one day at any rate all differences—theological, political, and personal—are for the most part laid aside, and for one day the poor, the wretched, and even the criminal, are made to feel that the rest of the world does not quite ignore them. Surely a reason which calls forth such a large exercise of that best of gifts—charity —cannot be otherwise than blessed. But this wont do. I shall be sermonizing if I keep on in this strain. With one more remark I will finish what I have to say on this matter. Let each one that wishes a really merry Christmas, t.ry to make it so for some one else; forget self and se...

FREELING. [From our own Correspondent.] December 23, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kapunda Herald — 27 December 1878

FBEELINGr. [From our own Correspondent.] December 23, 1878. Those unwelcome guests, the bailiffs, hare haunted Freeling lately so much as to give one the idea that they had taken possession of us. A farmer not four miles from here has had to put up -with their sociability for several days. JNow if the report is true, there is great need that baliffs in common with others, should refrain from the intoxicating bowl. In a certain seizure case, not necessarily the one just alluded to, the unfortunate party whose ; property was mighty doubtful of its owner, euchred the gentleman who had come along to settle the matter. He had nothing against the bailiff, knew lie was only doing his duty, and recognising in him a boon, a right hearty fellow, requested him to step across and have a nip. ^Nips are nice, as many a thirsty soul will agree with me, and nip followed nip, and the bailiff had got quite happy in Ins friend's company. Meanwhile, however, another nip was in process, and a dear oblig...
