Thns public meeting, which had been called by advertisement for the purpose.of taking the ,pre!iminary steps towards the organisai. tioniof a fire.brigade,:was held at the Coun. oil OChamber on Tuesday evening,' A: s usual the attcendance was-not very niumerous. The Mayor, Mr. H. F. Noble, occupied the chair, and in opening the proceedings, read the advertisement by which the meeting was convened, explaining at the same time that by an accidental oversight the notice had only. been published in one of the local papers. . Ie pointed out the necessity for such an institution as the proposed fire. brigade in view of the circumstance that most of the houses in the town were built of wood ; and remarked that from this cause, and the :known fact that no organisation for extinguishing fire existed in Kiiama, the rate of insurance here was abnormally high.
