THE NEW LAND TAX AND ITS OPPONENTS. (BY OBSERVER) At a special meeting of the Heales ville Shire Council held on the 3rd inst., Cr. Sloss, the seconder of the motion "that the President call a public meet ing" (at the ratepayer's expense, of course) ostensibly "for the purpose of discussing the taxation proposals of the Government," but really to protest against the land tax in any shape, is reported to have said " the people in the old country were so heavily taxed that they could hardly pay their rents, and it would soon be the same here." At the meeting held in Mrs. Daly's Hall only two days after, Cr. Sloss quoted fr. Zeal, as "showing without contradiction" that the cost to govern the colony of Victoria amounted to £2 17s. per head, whilst in England, where large armies and Fleets had to be main tained, besides the government of the whole empire, the cost per head was only 17s. 10d.
