NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 27 May 1898

Newc astle-on-T yne . The Newcastle-on-Tyne Jewish community has suffered a severe loss by the death 'iff one of its oldest and most prominent members, Mr. Benjamin Turner, after an illness of long dura tion, Deceased for many years played a lead ing part in congregational affairs, having filled the office of President of the. United Congrega tions, and contributed liberally to local Jewish charities. For many yea' s he presided at the annual dinners of the Chevra Kadisha till incapacitated by illness from doing so. Through his death, many of the principal Jewish families in Newcastle and the North of Englancl are in mourning. He was a true type of those who interest themselves conscientiously and unsel fishly for the welfare of the community. The Newcastle congregation is the poorer by his decease, especially at the present time, when it can ill afford to lose those who originally foun ded the congregation, and for many years helped to guide its destinies. ?

For Wives to Remember. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 27 May 1898

For Wives to Remember. That Adam was made first. That ' he pays the freight.' That ' Blessed are the meek.' That confidence begets confidence. That nine men in ten detest gossip. That all angels are not of your sex. That men sometimes have ' nerves.' That with all his faults you love him still. That husbands have troubles of their own. ? WHY I AM A JEW. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

WHY I AM A JEW. The very fact that the question, why I am a a Jew, can be put at all, conclusively proves 'that to be a Jew does not in the deepest sense of the word mean to beloDg to the alleged Jewish race or nationality, but to be a member of the Jewish Church. For it would be con sidered sheer madness, say for a Frenchman or Spaniard to rise and explain why he is a 'Frenchman or Spaniard. Once a Frenchman, ?always a Frenchman, one born of Spanish parents forever remains a Spaniard by the - indestructible law of his physical identity. But Jpne may change his religion and go over from ^one church to another. A Buddhist may become a Christian ; a Christian may embrace ; Islam or be converted to Judaism or to any tother religion. By changing his faith the ^Englishman does hot break away from his English nationality nor from his -assumed Anglo-Saxon race. In asking me why I am a Jew, you do consciously or unconsciously imply that I am a Jew\pf my own free will and accord, and that I ...

Marriages. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

Marriages. Two weddings were celebrated on Wednesday last June 1st, 1898, at the Great Synagogue, Elizabeth street, Sydney. i he building was crowded to its ut-. most capacity with onlookers. The decorations for the Succoth festival lent a picturesque charm. At 2.3Q o'clock the wedding of Miss Francia A. Joseph to Mr. B, De Groen was celebrated, the Rev. A. B. Davis officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. H. Landau. At 3 o'clock Miss Kate Harris was married to Mr Solomon L. Goldhill, the Rev. A. B. Davis officiating assisted by Rev. J. H. Landau. Mr. A. Gardiner, so well and favourably known, in Sydney, was admitted as a solicitor a few days ago. We understand Mr. Gardiner has a very fair prospect of success in the career he now fully enters upon. He served his articles with Mr. Maddocks Cohen. The Financial Adviser, a monthly Journal issued in Sydney devoted to finance reaches us. We have had many serious considerations on financial questions but the Adviser tends to place these matters in a roseate and comforting light and should prove useful. OUR PERTH LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 June 1898

OUR PERTH LETTER. The following correspond .nee has appeared in the Perth press between the Rev. D. I. Freedman and Mr. J. Lion on the subject of the Early Closing Bill, which a member of the Upper House intends bringing before Parliament in the enduing session : — Sir, -On March 7, 1898, I wrote to Mr, A. B. Kidson, M.L.C., with respect to the above proposed billt explaining to him that certain Jews closed on Satur days, and suggesting that in framing his bill to include a clause allowing those who close from conscientious reasons to keep open at later hours than proposed by the new law on Mondays and Thursdays to make up for such loss. I also advised Mr^. Kidson that the Rev. D. I. Fieedman, B.A., was the authorised Jewish mini ter, and could give him required information and data. I received a reply dated April 28, 1898, in which Mr. Kidson sympathised with my object, but regretted that at a meeting in Perth that had been held a few evenings previously it was found inadvisable to...
