Irrigation. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 1 July 1887

Irrigation. It ia estimated that tho oost of the schomo for taking flood-wators from tho lliver Murray to augment tho irrigation supply j from tbo Goulburti, by moans of gravita tion, will bo about £2,000,000. It waa at j first proposed to tap tho rivor botweon ' Howlong and Albury, but another aito for i a wior has been ohoson, about three miles abovo Wodonga. The Go. eminent of I New South Wales have boon recoinonded to tap the Murray at a point 0 miles below Albury. The cost of these under takings would be materially reduced if both colouios oould agree upon a sido for a common weir. It is probable that negotia tion? will be entered upon with a view to bring about some arrangement which would bo_ to thoir mutual advantage. Should this be accomplished no steps will bo taken towards carrying into effect any project for utilising tho waters of the Murray for irrigation until this colony, New South Wales, and South Australia Bhnll have come to an agreement on the subject.

Salt as a Fertiliser. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 1 July 1887

Salt as a Fertiliser. A subscriber asks what will be the effect of Halt on wheat, when to bow, and bow muoh per acre. Sodium Chloride or common salt ia a subi-tancj very abundant in nature nnd widely spread. It is found in tho ashes of almost nil plants, aud ia probably necessary to their growth, though in minute quantities, and this amount is rarely abseut from tho soil. Suit has, however, a beneficial chemical effect on the ingredients of so re soilB, rendering thorn fit for plant food. The benefit derived from its application is very variable, depending much ou tho orop and the kind of soil, and tho good to be derived must bo determined largely by experiment. It is thought by mo t f armors who have used it to be of little value on stiff clay soils, as it renders them more moiBt. It is used with tho bast results on livht sandy soils, and especially if they are rich in vegetable matter. A combination of salt aud lime, 1 bushel of the former to two of the latter is recommended by so...
